Smile Distributor recommendations??

Good morning,

I am looking to upgrade my distributor which appears to be original.
Definately has points : )

Can you guys give me recommendations for HEI that will fit in the 72 Blazer.

manufacturer and model number? As well as any tips for wiring mods?

Thanks... I 've only got about 100 miles on the new motor and want
to finish it right.

Alot of members, myself included, are using a HEI from Skip White. Here's a link to their e-bay store. Do a search on the board and you'll find several threads about their HEI. Sorry, but I can't help you on the wiring conversion.

The physical size is my biggest problem, with the locking ring, there is about a 1/4" to 1/2" clearance to the firewall. Other issue is the size of the yellow wire? from the starter. Needs 12 volts to the HEI, original wire has resistance (small size of wire = resistance)

Also, mine has the coil in the cap, and I think this is the problem with my space issue

Since mine is all apart, wouldn't be hard to get pics

When I converted my old points dist to electronic I wanted to retain the "small" cap dist so I went with a "ready-to-run" MSD Billit 8360

Keep the can type coil too:

This setup worked great!

HEI is alot cheeper but I just didn't want that type.

Seen the ad before, very intriguing. Clearance to the firewall is a concern. I'm considering going TBI. The ad above states for "carburated" systems. Is there a difference when you go TBI, MPI etc? Is it something that can be retrofitted to this type of Dist.? Or do you need to by a Dist specifically for TBI, MPI etc? I'm thinking it's got to be wiring to the ECU that's different.

When I put Edelbrock MPFI on my 454 I used this Mallory Dist #6148201 because it was made to work with the Edelbrock MPFI. Direct plugin.

I think the ready-to-run is more distributer than what is needed for EFI, the reason I say that is my current Mallory dist is super simple compared to the MSD one I had om my 350, I would assume that is because the ECU does all the "thinking" that the dist. does for carborated engines.

I don't know jack about TBI other than it's a batch fire type EFI...

I have a mallory unilite in my 71 blazer and 1969 camaro. Same size as a stock one No hassles

Correct. On later model engines with EFI, the spark advance is electronically controlled. On the later model, carburated motors with no ECU, it is vacuum controlled.

My computer with my pic software crashed. The post up above of the mallory is what it looks like. Except mine are vac advanced they have a few wires to run. My camaro 69 rs/ss 350 came with the unilite in it. The man I bought it from was a justice dept guy who knew his cars.(researched everything) He saved every part that went on or off the car. example 14in rallys with original redlines on them. he gave me boxes there were GM HEI etc. He said the unilite was the best. Anyway I built a 72 blazer and put a 327/365 in it with a GM HEI and lived with the problems of clearance --the cap vibrating off etc. So when I needed a dist for my 71 blazer. I called a local racing friend to ask where to get a unilite. he happened to have one so I got it. He said they were great. I know they recommended upgrading the coil. My camaro and my blazer still have stock coils. I just put new top half of the motor in my 71 blazer(down cylinder)
I lifted the unilite out mulitple times getting the teeth lined up on #1
If I can get a decent pic of it sitting in there with my blackberry I will email to jaros and he can post.

I have a skipwhite procomp HEI, it sits close to the firewall but still enough room it around for timing... bout 1/4" between the wires and firewall...

I'm putting it up for sale in the parts board tomorrow...

Bear in mind that if your body bushings are shot you will have to make some room with a 4 lb hammer to clear the coil.

I am using an Accel Supercoil equiped HEI and I had to stretch the firewall a bit to get it to clear.
But my body mounts are wasted and need replaced. With new bushings and a 1" body lift it won't be an issue any longer.





Yeah I know it's a mess under there. It's one of many things to do on the list.

I bought one of the skipwhite ones on Sunday. It showed up at the house Tuesday and it works great.

if you want to keep the smaller cap, just modify your points distributor , the pro billet, and unilites are nice, but way overkill and a waste of cash on a mild street driven engine in my opinion, you can get rid of the points, use your old distributor for around 80.00 for a pertronix kit.

Usually an HEI will fit, but every once in a while I read someone had to do a little massaging to get acceptable clearance. I put in a stock HEI from a 1978 and it fit without modification, but not alot of room back there for sure. I do have new rubber body mounts that I'm sure helped it fit.
