help with 87 drive line

I have a 62 truck and i bought a 87 chevy 3/4 ton, 2 wd 350 4 speed truck. I bought it for parts although it runs good.

Anyways my question: twelve bolt rear end under it... anyone know the actual width. I am trying to swap this rear end under my 62 truck for many reasons. Are they decent rearends? I may swap the whole drive train.

The 12 bolt is not standard. Someone installed it. I removed the original 10 bolt for a 12 in my truck.

The 87 is fuel injected too. Swap the frames!! The disc brakes are way better.

should i just take all my stuff (cab,bed,etc) and put it on my 87 frame?


or just swap everything over to the 62 frame off of the 87?



Do you know if the frames are even close to the same? I guess i could go look if it weren't dark. lol

You're better off swapping the parts to your old frame. The newer frames have a kickup in the back that interferes with the back of the older cabs.

As far as the width, you will be looking at 1.5 inches wider overall which is no problem at all. You can still run a normal 8 inch wide wheel in the rear.

I checked the truck in the daylight this time. It is really a 86 3/4 with a GM CORPORATE 14-BOLT rear end.. Is it still worth using? i don't know a thing about these rears.

Is your '62 a 3/4ton??? What year did they stop using the torsion bar front end? - if the 62 is a torsion bar front end, I don't think you can just swap the '86 front end parts over. If it is a regular "Knee-Action" front end you can just swap over the parts from the '86.

14b is a good rear end. If it is a Full Floater, it is even better.

His 62 should have torsion bars still. 63 was the change over to coil springs.
