Re: Brake light trouble 1966 Chevy c10 stepper
If you have voltage at the light socket you have a bad ground. Need to check ground where the light assembly bolts up. Clean or scrape or just loosen the nuts and retighten

Re: Brake light trouble 1966 Chevy c10 stepper
If you have cleaned the ground at the light assembly then it may be losing its power at the turn signal switch even if it shows voltage with a meter it may be losing its power when it trys to energize the bulb. I just had to replace a turn signal switch on one of my '66 trucks because of one brake light not working. I could get it to work if I would wiggle the turn signal lever just right, but the next time I would use the turn signals it would quit working. Hope this helps.

Thanks, excuse my stupidity. Turn signal switch is not the flasher right? I am a rookie. Thanks again for the reply. Where is the turn signal switch?

Re: Brake light trouble 1966 Chevy c10 stepper
it may be in the turn signal switch, which is located under the steering wheel in the column, ive had to mess with mine to get the lights to work as they should

Re: Brake light trouble 1966 Chevy c10 stepper
yeah sounds like the turn signal switch, it interrupts the brake light to allow the turn signal to flash, have some one mash the brakes with the key off and wiggle the turn signal lever at the same time while some one else watches the brake lights...

Re: Brake light trouble 1966 Chevy c10 stepper
this has happened to me before but if you take some sand paper and scuff up the ends of the bulb and where it connects it might make a difference. sometimes after sitting the bulb and the socket get corroded. worth a shot.

Re: Brake light trouble 1966 Chevy c10 stepper
the turn and brake are the same circuit...so the grond shouldn't be the problem

Re: Brake light trouble 1966 Chevy c10 stepper
This is probably your problem. I'm pointing at the right turn spring so you'll want the opposite one. It's not making contact with the other spring "second pic" and all its terminals. The orange wire is your brakelight input for the t/s switch. and should come out both yellow and green. Take your t/s switch out and clean and tweak your springs a bit. To fix it permanently replace the t/s switch.

Right on Jason!
You get it repaired, or are you gonna replace it?

Re: Brake light trouble 1966 Chevy c10 stepper
Hey check out the 6066 gmc guy web site in there lighting & electrical section under trouble shooting brake tail & turn lights. It saved me allot of hair pulling most of the problems were ground with some exceptions being in the steering column. Vernski

Here is one.http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cbe/full.aspx?Page=75
I bet you could find others if you check the usual 60-66 spots. |

Re: Brake light trouble 1966 Chevy c10 stepper
I know this is an old thread but I thank you all for the info. I just ordered a turn signal switch from the classic parts link. Is there a trick to pulling the electrical plugs through the metal sleeve? Thanks and Happy New Year 2019

Re: Brake light trouble 1966 Chevy c10 stepper
If you loosen up the two bolts that hold the sleeve on- should give you some wiggle room.

Re: Brake light trouble 1966 Chevy c10 stepper
I replaced my turn signal switch and ran a ground wire from each light to the frame. It might be overkill but the lights work great.

Oh gosh, just noticed how old this thread is. Um, does anybody have an answer for me? I'd love to replace this aftermarket turnsignal switch and have mine working properly again. |
