I forget what it's for, but yeah you need it, or so I'm told.

Did that help?

Re: Why do i need this door piece

Don't quote me on this as my blazer is missing these pieces.... but I believe those are shims that keep the door tightly closed even when the body flexes, especially when the top is off. There should be one on the door pillar and one on the door itself.

If you don't have them installed, your door will fly open every time you hit a good bump. Especially if your rockers are rotted out.

Sorry I didn't mean to scare you, the shims help align the doors and keep them sturdy especially when the top is off. They are there to help stabilize the door, and keep the latch in-place. They were some of the extra engineering, along with the rocker box designed to provide stiffness while the top is off.

Your doors shouldn't pop open as long as your rocker box and rocker are solid.

FWIW... my 72 2wd even has them. The one on the door in the picture above is stainless. The ones that go on the body jamb are chrome plated mild steel .
I certainly am going to reinstall them. Even with my cage, I expect some flex. Heres something you can do for a demonstration of body flex. Take off the top... open a door... jackup either front wheel. Now, try and shut the door.
