Dana 60 oil seal replacement question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I seem to have oil getting into the brakes (diff oil is low with no external leak,wet brake shoes). The manuals aren't too clear about the different types, Eaton,Dana. I am assuming that I just remove the axle shaft and then the hub and use a puller to extract the inner oil seal? I haven't looked yet. Have any of you guys done this on a Dana and is it pretty straightforward or do I need any special instructions or tools? Thx WLH

It's very easy.

Remove the axle shaft bolts and axle shaft.
Remove the two skinny locknuts that hold the bearings in.
Yank hub off, seal is on the back of the hub.

For goodness sake though, be forewarned, those seals are damn hard to find. I looked all over, including a large bearing and seal house. No deal. The only way I was able to get mine was to order them through O Reilly and wait for them to arrive at my store (4 days).

Mine bearings were leaking on my Dana 44 (I think they should be the same procedure). I replaced the bearing and inner seals. I took it to a NAPA machine shop and they happened to have the parts I needed and did the work for me.

You can remove the whole brake backing plate if you want to, but shouldn't be necessary.

Forgot to mention. My bearing plates had a factory gasket but I couldn't find that part anywhere. I wound up making my own with gasket material. Not sure if they're needed since the seals and the bearings are what provides the protection.

If it's like mine, remember that the bearings are sealed, prelubed and press fitted on the shaft.

The 3/4 ton Dana sixty is different. The bearings are not sealed. The hub gets oil from the center of the rearend housing and the bearings ride in that.

Thanks. It was really easy, except for the fact that apparently you're not supposed to seat the seal (it will but up against the bearing and cause major friction). Just drive it flush,not much further. $28.69 at CarQuest. WLH
