Custom Camper rear wheels

This is probably common knowledge for all you 67-72 buffs. What were the dimensions of the rear rims on the 3/4 ton camper specials like the one my dad had. They were extra wide and looked deep and they were white. The tires on them were extra fat and they were stock. Can anyone tell me what to get and where to get them?

Thanks,

Dan

Re: Custom Camper rear wheels

The rims were 10 x 16.5". They came with big a** 33 x 12.50 x 16.5 tires, usually the heavy load rated tires. The fronts usually remained 9 x 16.5, but I have seen the 10's on the fronts and somehow they don't rub... That's my 2 cents worth.

Re: Custom Camper rear wheels

I literally just (today) put a set of 16x8 front and 16x10 rear Ion wheels on my truck. Not stock at all, but it's got the same look.

I think the stock rims, the few remaining, sell for a pretty good amount of money. However, in my search for a set of wheels for my truck, I came across this site, which sells what you're looking for: http://www.stocktonwheel.com/heavy_duty_wheels.htm

You'd be looking for their 20 series wheel.

The site is a bit misleading, they advertise that they can pretty much build any wheel you want, to fit any car. Not at all true. I made a few inquiries about getting a set of Chevy "Rally" looking wheels in 8 lug, and they directed me to the 20 series, or to get wheels from somewhere else. (???)

Thanks! Wheels were cheap, too. Around $90 each from a guy on eBay.

Re: Custom Camper rear wheels

Werewolf, The old school wide camper wheels were 9.75 (bead to bead...11.0 outside width) x 16.5 in the rear. Here is a pic of them powder coated in GM Argent silver. You can find them in the junk yards and at the swap meets for about $20-$25 each.

Like 69GMCLonghorn says...33 x 12.5 x 16.5 look great on them. I also posted a pic of the 33's on 9.75's on all 4 corners of my Longhorn.

One more pic...pre powder coat.

Re: Custom Camper rear wheels

I'll keep an eye out if I ever see a set, but these days most junkyards don't have these trucks anymore. At least not the ones I hit. On the other hand, I'm always looking for newer car parts.

Nice golden anniversary! Are the new coated wheels going on it?

Yes they will. I am going to paint them gold first however with bc/cc so it will look just like the centerfold in the Longhorn brochure...LOL!

Andy, That is the only place I have seen them painted gold. I just love that sleeper look from that era on the old Chevelles and Impalas with the dog dish caps. I can't wait to get it done.

something that no one has pointed out, they were not "custom Camper wheels" nor part of any package, but an option on there own.

Re: Custom Camper rear wheels

Wide steel wheels could be ordered as an option, but many were bought after the truck was sold. Dick Cepek in Los Angelos sold a ton of wide steel wheels (aftermarket)and wide tires for pickup campers in the 70's.

So true! The widest wheel available was 8.25 inch. The 9.75 inch wheels were aftermarket. I have had a couple of sets some were Kelsey Hayes and the really old school (with the clips) were Firestone Duplex. I have brochures on them and if I can ever get my scanner working I will post some pics.

Here is a picture of the 8.25 inch factory stock wheels. Note: Those trim rings are just sitting in there...you can't get trim rings to work on these rims!

The bias tire sizes back then were 10-16.5,11-16.5,and 12-16.5.The 12s were 32s.They started the other profiles later on.here`s my old Custom Camper with 9.50s on front and 12.50s on the rear...again:

Re: Custom Camper rear wheels

Nice Yamahauler.that truck`s a blast from straight out of the`70s.These 3/4t trucks look awesome enough with whatever wheels were used back then.

Hey hilndr452,i need your address.I lost it.

Here it is at night stylin`with the tonneau at Myrtle Beach,SC.The other picture was Edisto Island,SC.I really miss it.

And,while I`m at it,my favorite shot.Too bad it`s just a piece of it.This was taken between Taos and Chama in`89.We went as far as the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Here`s another shot showing the wheel/tire proportions.

Those pics make me want to buy a two-tone ochre truck! cadillacart, those wheels look like Jackmans. If they are...don't toss them...blast and powder coat...the 4x4 guys around here kill for them.

Re: Custom Camper rear wheels

I agree.I put white spokes on my blue and white K/20 Highlander with original paint intentionally, for that "well seasoned" look.

Seeing those pics makes me want one, too. If you squint from a distance looking at a 50th it`s kinda the same.

Jackmans hhad the spokes welded directly to the rim, like a star with no ring.No others did. They also stamped a "J" in one spoke. They were the first wagon wheel:
