Gee, it's a shame it isn't clean... j/k That is definitely a keeper. After 5 years and $20,000, mine still doesn't look that good.

That is a gorgeous original. Your father really took care of it over the years.

Hahaha, no I'm not trying to hook up I'm trying to get some info on a cool truck. I live in New Mexico also and there's some nice rust free trucks in this area.

Re: pics 1971 longhorn C20 custom camper

Thank you guys, I really appreciate your interest in keeping the topic about the truck. special K, I've posted more on the truck under my name today, so you'll find stuff there too. Yes, I want to keep the truck as original as I can, because I like the "heirloom", "keeping it original" idea too. Dad did that for 38 years, and I want to continue. I've seen a bunch of 1971 chevy trucks, BUT, they've been modified to one extent or another. And I've seen no longhorn, or custom campers, so that makes this truck fairly rare and worth taking care of. It has all the custom camper accessories. I did take out the altimeter dad put in, he brought it home from work one day and said it came out of an old Air Force plane (he was AF for 25 years). well, i tested it w/ a geiger counter and yes, it glowed in the dark! They used to paint those dials w/ radium so the pilots could see them at night. I gave it to the local university for education purposes. Dad passed away March 21, 2008, and no one wanted the truck, the family knew i did, so mom gave it to me. I drove it from Idaho to NM that June. The truck had been in Idaho since 1972, dad bought it new in Massachusetts (sp) in 1972 and drove it to Idaho where they moved. It has been there for the last 37 years until I drove it to NM. The trip took 2.5 days, 1000 miles, very hot (102 F), 11,000 feet altitude mountain passes (the truck didn't like no oxygen and I smelled gasoline a bit), but it worked perfectly. The truck has only 65,000 miles on it. I think dad rebuilt/replaced the engine. I think it is a 1975 small block chevy by the numbers stamped on the block. The bed wood is also in great condition. So, that's it for now. A new antenea, cig lighter, and a lot of cleaning the under carriage is in the works. I love to cruise in it. After all, this is NM and it's a fav of the locals! Pics upload isn't working now, I'll send more later.

I don't think any of us get tired of hearing great stories like this. Enjoy that truck forever!!

On a lighter note, aren't you glad your dad didn't by a Pinto and keep it for 30 years?! HAHA! (Hey, where did my emoticons go??) Wait! I found them!

Your truck is an excellent representation of a 1971 C 20 Custom Camper. Glad to see you keep the truck just the way the factory built it, it looks great just the way it is.I know you had to make sacrifices to get it just right, but it is worth it. To me, preserving history is more important than customizing to the latest fad or creature comfort.

Wow......cool story! It sounds like you know a little a something about trucks and that's cool that you can appreciate the value of keeping it as original as possible. Treasure it always.
