Lincoln 180HD welder or continue looking

I have a pending deal on the Lincoln or should I keep looking?
I'm finishing up boxing my frame and going to be welding brackets and tabs for my air bags, will this welder handle 1/4" with a single pass? Should I get this if all I'll be using it for working on the frame?

Or wait and try to save and get a Miller 211?

I read you post and saw that's what you got, so that made me interested in the 211.
The price is really go for the Lincoln so I really want to know if it has the capability to do the 1/4" steel.

Looks like 3/16 with solid wire and they say 1/2 with flux. Here is their specs on the 180HD.

I have the millermatic 210 and I love that thing. One thing for sure... you can't go wrong with the Miller. I never used a Lincoln but it's probably just as good.

i dont know what it is it may just be me but ive always had better luck out of a miller than a linclon. i have a hobart which is made by miller its the iron man 210. i got it from tractor supply for about $1100. it will weld 3/8 in a single pass. thats just my two cents.

There are a lot of great deals online for welders. Got mine for under a grand, shipped free, and no sales tax. It showed up in a week.

I agree. I have a 100 amp lincoln mig and I have welded plenty of 1/4" stuff with it, so yours should be just fine.

Re: Lincoln 180HD welder or continue looking

I don't like the HD welders Lincoln makes. They are made for Home Depot, and they are cheaper because they use cheaper materials.

I got my Lincoln 215XT for under $1400 out the door. I've had better luck with Lincoln than I have Miller, so that's why all my welders are now Lincoln.

Re: Lincoln 180HD welder or continue looking

If he's looking at a used 180HD then I am guessing $1400 is a bit out of his budget.

I would snap it up. Can I be nosy and ask the selling price?

Before I bought mine I lost two deals on the 140HD (didn't get there and pick them up quick enough and someone else bought them). Did a lot of research on those and it was all good feedback.

Thanks for the rplies fellas, The lincoln I'm looking at is ~$400 new in the box but it's from a private party not a authorized dealer thus this may not honor the warrany if something goes wrong with the welder.

Should I just take a chance and get it? From what you are saying is that it will do what I want it to do.

I stand corrected on the model: It's a Pro-Mig 180, what's the difference compared to 180HD?

Re: Lincoln 180HD welder or continue looking

The Pro Mig is definitely not the ones they made for Home Depot, so I would say it's a better welder.

Sounds like a decent deal. I just don't think you can go wrong with a Lincoln. If you ever wanna resell it and upgrade, they hold their resale value pretty well.

Re: Lincoln 180HD welder or continue looking

I am pretty sure that the pro Lincoln has a different dial setup for heat and wire speed. instead of the home depot models having a set of clicks in the dial like set settings a b c d e or whatever they have a sweeping dial type to fine tune the speed and heat. I have the 180 Lincoln and I have welded a lot of 1/4 with gas no problem. I am definitely a miller guy since I bought my 200 sync tig but I use that 180 whenever I have the chance.......

If it's a Pro Mig for $400 I would get it. They sell for almost twice that if I remember right.

Re: Lincoln 180HD welder or continue looking

oh yeah I am pretty sure that the I paid around 700 for the welder a bottle and a bigger spool of wire from a local welding shop in town....

I might be wrong the welder I have I think is a SP model. I'll check but I know the one with the sweeping dial is a better welder than the home depot style...

Cool. Glad you got one. Everyone loves the miller welders (never used one), so I am sure you will too.
