Saginaw Type PS pumps

I have a few questions about these pumps.
How can I tell if I have a press fit or keyed pump?
Can I adapt one that was on a SBC to a BBC with only a bracket change?
If I have a press fit how do I get the pulley off?

Thanks for any input and pics are appreciated!

Re: Saginaw Type PS pumps

The keyed pump will have the center shaft with threads sticking past the pulley with a nut on it.

The pressed type will have the pump shaft flush with the edge of the pulley with no nut retaining the pulley.

You need a pulley puller to get the pressed pulley off.

Re: Saginaw Type PS pumps

You didn't say what you are working on. (truck i'm guessing) long water pump or short water pump. Fwiw I recently finished a 67 camaro with a bb. It had the older "round" looking pump/reservoir combo. Looks like the ones used on these older trucks. The pump was from a small block and was used on the bb with a different bracket. However the camaro has the pump/reservoir combo bolted to the engine for all applications. Unlike the truck and chevelle which used a separate pump and reservoir on the bb.

A bolt on pulley is alot more user friendly.
