Cummins swap opinions needed
Ok I've posted my plans before but now I'm having second thoughts. Its a 68 lwb 4x4 and trying to figure out what I should do. I got a 91 w350 dodge with a 5spd. Should I do the swap or not my friends have been no help at all on this matter so what do you all think? I'm looking for something that will stand out in a crowd. Thanks

Re: Cummins swap opinions needed
There's a wealth of information on this site about conversions:
http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/index.php? I'm considering the same thing with my Carryall, possibly.

Re: Cummins swap opinions needed
Do it.Your friends' lack of foresight will become crystal clear jealousy if you do.
If you decide you don`t want to take it on I`d like a shot at taking it off your hands. But,I hope you go ahead with it.

Re: Cummins swap opinions needed
Those 5.9 cummins are a great engine. The ONLY down side that I can see is that those early ones are loud. In these early cabs with less soundproofing than newer ones, you may have to wear earmuffs to drive the thing. If that's not a concern, give 'er. You can work on sounproofing the firewall and floor if it's too much.

Personally, I say it's youre machinery, do what you WANT to do with it. If I owned that Chevy and Dodge I'd definitely be inclined to throw the hammer down and get it done!

Re: Cummins swap opinions needed
Thanks to all that posted so far this is what I was wanting to hear, I just seem to think that it would be so cool to pop the hood of my 68 and have 6 valve covers staring back at me! plus can't wait to pull up somewhere and have people wonder what all that noise is!

Re: Cummins swap opinions needed
I say its a good idea! That is a great engine and they sound awesome straight piped. If I had that engine I would definitely do it. And the best part is that you get to blow smoke in small cars windows

Man all this feedback is making me feel good about wanting to do this, I was afraid that everybody was going to say I was stupid for wanting to cut up a factory 4x4.

Re: Cummins swap opinions needed
i think "seeing" a 67-72 4wd GM rolling along is always a wonderful sight.Add "hearing" a Cummins to that image and you have awesome!

Might want to look into that transmission though, I have heard some bad things about the Getrag from those first gen cummins trucks.

Re: Cummins swap opinions needed
If I do this I figure it iwill be a lot easier if I sit the chevy on the dodge frame and make new body mounts, so yes it will have a dana 60f and I think it has a dana 80 rear, it is a dually and my srw hubs for the front just came in yesterday. The getrag is in good shape inside but the shift tower is worn out so I found a guy that has them rebuilt for next to nothing so got one on the way.

Re: Cummins swap opinions needed
I didn't catch that "I got a 91 w350 dodge with a 5spd" I thought you just had the engine and transmission. That would be a lot better to swap the body onto the chassis. Speaking of, I just saw them put a 70's ford crew cab on to a dodge frame on trucks today it was 2wd cummins 5 speed though. I saw a guy a while back do this swap with a copper colored 67-72 chevy, any one else seen it i haven't been able to find it?

Re: Cummins swap opinions needed
Just got some bad news. I talked to the owner of the local pullin track and he said I won't be able to pull in any diesel street class he has. That means I will have to run in th mod class with power adder trucks all because chevys didn't come with a cummins so I was feeling good about doing the 68 until all this now I don't know what to do?

Re: Cummins swap opinions needed
Do it! There is no sweeter sound than a 1st gen Cummins 12 valve. Especially in a Chevy! If you need any performance info, just PM me.

Re: Cummins swap opinions needed
Show him this even though its a 68
Quote from DOOLEY "You could buy light duty GM trucks with Cummins engines in them in the 80's. You could order your new truck from the dealer with a Cummins option. The truck would be built and then shipped to a Cummins facility for the installation. It then would be shipped to your dealer for delivery.GM warranted the truck and Cummins the engine." http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=360276

On that poster, though, I am curious how exactly a Cummins saves weight? I'm pretty sure even the 4BT's weigh more than fully dressed big blocks. I knew they repowered the P-vans, but didn't know they also did C-series as well. Must not be too many of them running around. Actually, I think I have to call BS on that conversion info. It looks homemade. Since Case and Cummins made the B series to be used in agricultural applications, I sort of doubt that when it was in its infancy they would license it to GM to put in a pickup. I could be wrong here, but something's fishy about that ad.

Re: Cummins swap opinions needed
I had a 93 cummins in mine with an nv4500, it was sweet. I also started with an LT1, it was faster with the LT1 from a start, but pulled way harder with the cummins. I turned up the pump , advaced the timing a bit, and went with 4" exhaust. I Say go for it. I pulled mine for three reasons.
First I have a super dookie that needed an engine, and the cummins fit the bill, I dodnt use my chevy as a daliey driver ant more so milage was not as much of a concern, and a cummins is very heavy, if I went in mud, deep snow, or sand, it would sink... If you want it to be faster, turn up the pump, add an inter coooler, the second gen fits behind the grill nicely, add a pyrometer, and change the exhaust housing fom the 21cm to a 16 or 14cm, 4 " ehaust, and a free flowing intake. That will help a lot. From ther you can add injectors and change turbos, after that you will need to upgrade the ve pump to a p7100 but that is $$$$. The sky is the limit , well your wallet is the limit, but after that the sky is the limit. If you start to buld some serious power, you will need a clutch up grade, and then a tranny upgrade as well.... I can go on and on.. I love the cummins! |
