Do I need to remove the gas tank?

I need to replace the rubber filler neck hose on my '66 GMC gas tank. It's the hose that goes from the gas tank to the outside filler neck. Do I need to remove the tank to make this work? Just want to know what I'm getting into

Re: Do I need to remove the gas tank?

On the 1960 there are two clamps, one on either end of the connector hose between the fill pipe and tank. Just loosen both clamps and you can pull the filler pipe out of the body grommet, allowing replacement of the hose. I don't think there were ever any changes in this assembly so your 66 should be the same.

The body grommet may have turned to wood so it may help to soak it in Armoral or the like before getting started to make it easier to pull the pipe out. If it's the original grommet you should also replace it at the same time.

Maybe my '66 is different, but how are you supposed to get up in there and loosen hose clamps? I have a bad problem with gas fumes myself and there is only one clamp right now, the lower one clamping the hose section to the filler neck. I sure don't see any way to put the other clamp in without removing the fuel tank.

Thanks for the help. Could you suggest a mail order place to buy the filler neck hose and the body grommet?

I don't remember if I used a stubby screwdriver or a 1/4" ratchet, but it can be done. It should have 2 clamps.

American Classic sells them:

I would imagine Brothers, LMC, etc also carry them.

As for the question on the second clamp, it's been many years since I eliminated the in cab tank, but I believe the stock hose clamps were the double wire type, and could be tightened or loosened with a 1/4" wrench. That was the only way I could reach the upper clamp.

Re: Do I need to remove the gas tank?

Hey MRKC,

I replaced my hose with the tank in place as the others have said. It is a pain but I was able to fish my hand around in there and finally get the clamps loose.

I got the replacement hose from LMC.

I used modern radiator hose clamps when I put it back on and arranged the clamping screws in a favorable position to make it easier to remove.

No more gas fumes. But I am taking the in cab tank out for good this weekend.

Good luck,

TR

Re: Do I need to remove the gas tank?

I finally got mine. Someone must have been messing around in there since the clamp wasn't the original type. I put another one for the top and was able to get it positioned so I could get a stubby nut driver on it. I'm thinking the gas fumes are solved now, man it was bad before. Smelled like raw fuel was pouring out into the cab but none really was, just fumes.

Re: Do I need to remove the gas tank?

I think that's the primary reason for most tank relocations under the bed. I had the new connector hose and grommet, but the cab still reaked of gas in the summer after each fill up. Problem being the system still vents thru the cap which is right next to the window.

It can be done without removing the neck. Here's how I did mine:

May not be the easiest way, but it worked.

Re: Do I need to remove the gas tank?

I had to replace mine ages ago on my 62, and If I remember, I had to cut the dang clamps with a heavy pair of dikes, cant use any driven wheel cutters or it would go boom. Yes a heavy string or rope just like doin a windshield.
