New float should arrive today. Now I realize the gasket is in bad shape. What would be the best material to make one out of? How thick?

Just had mine out to do some tank work. It's a rather thick O-ring, I'd guess about 1/4" dia. from memory, and quite spongy, with a tab to align it to the opening. I'm not certain how critical it is to duplicate it exactly, but based on my limited experience I'd suggest trying to get the O-ring from the parts store. Its not the type of thing that readily accessible if you find out later on that you should have used something else.

For example, here's the lockring with gasket (black ring) from Summit. You might find the gasket on its own locally. Good luck.
