Longhorn drive line

I was just wondering if anyone out there has run into a problem with replacing the carrier bearing on a Longhorn? All of the replacment bearings I have seen are totally different than the original in appearance and mount to the crossmember different. I think the horse shoe style will work by drilling new mounting holes, assuming the bearing size is the same. I just wanted to know if anyone has done this before I cut the old bearing off or if anyone knows if the original stle bearing is available somewhere? Thanks, Chris.

When I had my truck restored,I think I bought mine at car quest and had the mechanic put it on for me . I think he used a press.

I don't have a problem with changing it, it's just that the only replacements I have found do not resemble the original at all. This may be exclusive to Longhorns, the bearing mounts on top of the cross member instead of hanging below it like I am used to seeing.

a few years ago when i had my driveshaft done, th guy told me they had stopped making the correct C-brearing years ago.
This is for a 1970 350/TH350 C/30 longhorn.

Thanks, thats pretty much what I figured. No one I talk to has ever seen the style like I have. I would still like to know if this is a Longhorn thing or if other 3/4- 1 tons had the same style. Mine is a 1970, C/20, 350/350, 8',6" bed.

Are you talking about this style? If so, they are weak IMO. I remember years ago swapping out the mount bracket on the crossmember to the regular style. Just find a parts truck with the regular setup and cobb the bracket needed... then you won't have to fix it again for at least 200,000 miles

I had a 1970 C20 Longhorn with a two piece drive line. I don't know if all Longhorns have a two piece drive line or not? I kept the short piece when I sold the frame. I think I have the carrier bearing somewhere but I have to look.

No thats the 1/2 ton style, the replacement for mine is called the horse shoe style. I'm convinced that I'll be using the horse shoe, just wanted to know if other Longhorn owners have run into this. The original has the bearing with rubber around it then two triangle shaped halves bolted together surounding the rubber. They form a sort of housing, then this housing bolts to the cross member with four bolts. It sits on top of the cross member instead of hanging from it. The cross member has kind of a trough in it for this thing to sit in, which is really a piss poor design, mud and dirt and such just sit in and rot. This truck is from KS and has alot of body rust, I'm surprised the cross member is still solid. Some day I'll learn how to post pictures I know that would help.

O.K. that is completely different than my set up. mine actually mounts in that little trough below where yours mounts. I can see I might have to set up the new one similiar to yours. I think my cross member sits higher in the frame.
