HO52 gear swap preparations

i am hoping to change out the 4.57 gear for the 4.10 on saturday. i have a lot of the stuff ready to go but want you all to check my grocery list. is there a gasket for the third member to diff housing surface or do i just use rtv? i am planning to do both on the diff cover. they make a rebuild kit but the third member i am installing was reportedly serviced a year ago and i haven't had cause to susepect any bad bearings or such over the last several months of driving it. someone mentioned in an old thread about changing the cap when doing the swap. there is a cup and cone according to the list of part numbers i have.

what i have:
4.10 third member
napa diff cover gasket
permatex hi-temp silicone rtv
axle seals
royal purple 75w-90 gear oil

I really like this rearend setup. I blew up the 456 gears in mine and a friend had totalled his 70 that had 373s it is so easy to do the swap. Dropping out the third member and being able to build it as far as you can on a bench is nice. There is a gasket for it and I actually used it on both sides (ie gear and pan side). There are also gaskets to seal the axles to the hub but I just dope it with silicone. I just wish a posi was able to be found. I even checked with Eaton directly and they don't have them.

Once axle shafts are removed, it will drop out. Its heavy, so have a floor jack under it. There are 2 different gaskets needed for job. One is thin, for front carrier housing, the other is thick, for cover.Also you'll need a pump to get gear oil back in. Metal axle shaft gaskets can be reused with RTV sealant.

hey Stueber68.......how did you get a 3.73? i feel lucky to have found a good 4.10 for the price i paid. rain and other things have prevented me from tackling the project this weekend.

I was wondering the same thing when I saw that... never heard of a 3.73 in an eaton HO52 or HO72
