Gas Tanks again.

Looking at gas tank options. My tank currently has a nice hole in it. I was wondering if I could get a gas tank out of a 73+ blazer/suburban and use it in my blazer? I know the cross member may have to be relocated, but is there anyone that has done this before and do you have pictures? Also, will this work with my original sender, or will I need to change that out too? I would really love the 40 gallon take that the suburban.

I installed a 31 gal. tank in my blazer. I moved the stock rear crossmember back as far as it would go and got the front crossmember from a 73 up blazer/suburban. I think I used the stock filler tube from my original tank. It will have to be moved to the driver side of the tank. I bought a new tank and picked up a used sender as they are different than the 72 style. It is a pretty straightforward swap. I will be doing this again in the near future on my other blazer. I plan to take step by step pics for others to see. I will also be doing this without the body on the frame so it should be easier to see what is being done. I'm not sure but I think the 40gal. tank may be longer from front to back. If you look in a JC Whitney book they have the dimensions of all the different size tanks.

How far below the frame rails does the new tank hang?

Anything more than where a stock tank sits (7.5"s below the rail) and you can forget about wheeling, unless of course you build a skid plate but even then it blows the departure angle.

Offhand does anyone have the measurements for the 24 gal and 31 gal Blazer/Suburban tanks?

I picked up a 79 Blazer tank that I think is a 24 gal but I would like to know the differences in size.

Whew...that really hangs low but that's the price for having that much capacity and I can see where it would certainly be nice at times.

Hrm. This looks like something I will have to give consideration to since I don't really plan on wheeling mine more than some logging trails, but do plan on driving it on the road a lot. Thanks for the pictures. What modifications did you have to do for the fill neck again?

I just soldered the original fill neck onto the new tank and soldered a flat piece of sheetmetal over the 73up filler hole. I will get some pics as soon as I get the body off, which will be in the next weekend or two.
When ever I go in the woods I never seem to find my way home till after dark when all of the podunk gas stations are closed. I am very happy with the decision to go with the 31 gal. over the stock tank. I am even happier I used the skid plate!

ok, Bringing this back up to the top.

I just got a NOS 31 gallon tank for a 90 blazer while at Carlisle friday. I plan on using this in my 70 blazer instead of the OEM tank (which I scrapped already)

I now need to know two thing:

1. What needs to be done to mount it? What parts are needed? Anyone have good pictures?

2. What sending unit can I get that will work with this and my motor? The original sender is smaller than the current opening. I would rather not cut and weld it as I might go to TBI later on (that's another question)

That 90 tank should be ready to go for EFI, pick up the correct in-tank pump for the TBI and install a regulator on the carb end until you go to injection.


When you get it installed, do the skid plate at the same time, otherwise your wheelin' days are over.
