Some Assembly Required / build #2
Well . I had back surgury a while back and sold my truck ( white Knight ) to maintain a "comfort" zone for my family . I have been working real had to get back in shape and have been back to work for quite some time . Well the other day a guy at work ask if i was still into old trucks . Turns out he has one and wants to get rid of it . It's a 67 swb stepper minus motor and trans . Negotiations are reached and it's mine . It is a plain jane , no power , base model . My goal is to build another nice driver doing a frame off on this one . I intend to paint it myself . Small block , auto , rear mount tank , ralley wheels , nice static drop , A/c and such . Here is the first phase of it .
Was looking in the classifieds for parts and found wideside 72's ad for 72' swb roller . talked to him and bought it . This chapter will be about todays trip to Leander , Texas to pic it up . Got out of the house about 8 am to pick up a buddy for the road trip . Rick rode shotgun with me on the trip . Made it nice to have someone to talk with . Got to downtown and ran into some morning traffic . It wasn't too bad only set us back a little bit . Got out I-10 to Columbus and headed up towards Austin . Finally got there and met Steve . Super nice guy . Very peaceful place he has , creek running through the back of his place that you can hear . Rolling hills . All in all a good experience . Got the chassis loaded up and tied down and pulled together a game plan for lunch . Steve had to get back to work , so me and Rick were back on our own . Steve told us about a local BBQ place in Cedar Park on the way out and we gave it a try . Very good choice . Sliced brisket just melts in your mouth . Thanks Steve . We headed out and made real good time on the way back getting around 14 with my diesel . Got back just in time to get to the gym and find out i got called into work tommorow . I will be picking up the 67 ' soon .

Now for the bad news . The purchase price made it worth it anyway .

Re: Some Assembly Required / build #2
If you can find a cab in better shape do that to save time and money, but most I find need cab corners, rockers, and cab supports anyways....If you're doing the work yourself, the patch panels are cheap. If you're going to pay someone it's probably worth it to get a rust free cab shipped from AZ or areas of California.
Not sure if you're going to use those wheels or not, but they are coming back into style so the value is going up on them....so don't scrap them.

Re: Some Assembly Required / build #2
O.K im going to post a few pics tonight , but today i called on a Blazer i had been meaning to get with the owner on . I went and looked at the Blazer and the guys sister showed me around the truck and in the barn were the parts were . I had intended to get back with him on it , but he is in another town . Well he moved it out by the road for sale . I called him last night and he told me someone pulled up and stole it from out by the road and to just come get all the parts out of the barn ! I'll take pics of the barn , but this is a major stash .

Re: Some Assembly Required / build #2
Well Between the long hours at work (thank god for that ) , the end of the football season ( daughters a cheerleader ) , The 49' (almost finished ) and the Camaro (headed to the body shop) . I found a little time to put some paint on the frame for this project . I live 4 miles from the gulf/bay and this frame was bare . It had only been here a week and flash rust had already started . I will still need to paint the control arms and axle , but i'll do that when i lower it and freshen the ball joints . Anyway here the are the pictures .
I also had the chance to spend halloween with Lee ( spraybombs dad and the previous owner of the 67' white knight ) . He bought the 6 cylinder from my last project to replace a failed one in one of his projects . We got to talking about the condition of my cab and how i missed the nice one Jholley had for sell in Waco and i might be making another road trip up to Miniola for a 68' short step he has . He is going to send me some pictures of it and we'll take it from there . I also plan on going over to Sugerland , Texas to pic up a set of rims and tires tommorow . They are weld drag stars in 15 x 7 with 235/60/15 for the front and 15 x 10 with 275/60/15 rear . I'll get some pictures of those up asap . Gonna check gear ratio and carrier type tommorow . Also have a set of drop spindles in the works . I'll try and update quicker

Re: Some Assembly Required / build #2
Well it finaly dried up enough to get the other doner truck . I thought this truck was gonna be the one , but the rust damage is pretty bad . I do not have the talent it takes to replace the sheet metal from the top of the windshrild to the roof / gutter lip . The damage is all the way throug to were the visors mount . This truck sat within eye distance from Galveston bay for 4 years and never moved . It is rusted from the top down . It does have a nice bed and alot of parts i need . i will be looking for a better cab . Here are todays pics . It is in the garage next to my 68' RS .

Re: Some Assembly Required / build #2
Your project is looking great, your very lucky to run across deals like this. I live in Austin and I think I saw that add on CL for the frame. I have been looking for the right SWB for about 6 months here locally with out much success. Im sure your going to have it looking great in no time....
Hows your back? You mentioned that you had a surgery on it, did you get a fusion? I have had 2 fusions and need another one, I have been fighting extreme back pain for 7 years now. I really hate to hear of others having back trouble.... I know how bad it can be... Good luckon your project and if you hear of a swb fleetside project for sale let me know... Thanks! |

Good luckon your project and if you hear of a swb fleetside project for sale let me know... Thanks![/QUOTE] My back is doing good . I had a lamenectame (spelling?) were they cut the hurniation off the disc . I had a fusion in my neck about 3 years ago . My wife and i workout at the gym 4 or 5 nights a week and this has helped me more than i can explain . We also walk nightly . I use mechanical means to lift when possible , but i feel good and have pretty full mobility . I take better care of myself now . Thanks for asking . Hope you get to feeling better also . Well i got some paint on it tonight .I also pulled th ehurricane wheels off and bolted on a set of rallys i had laying around . The tire on the aluminum rims would not hold air and i now need this mobile . I went today to look at the most complete and unmolested 67 CST long bed i have ever seen . Loaded air truck V-8 , th400 , 3/4 ton , almost rust rust free . Just needs rockers . Prolly gonna buy it . I just need to close the deal . I'll post up some pics of it coming up . Anyway here is todays update . And my helper . Not much of a cat person , but the girls adopted her when she showed up after the hurricane . She is always hanging around the garage while im working .
