gas tank ideas?

I removed the tank from behind the seat and I was thinking about purchasing the 63-72 blazer gas tank kit for these trucks to place it under the bed. I was wondering if anyone has tried the 73-87 or newer style gas tanks or what other options are there??

Re: gas tank ideas?

Hopefully someone else has the direct answer to the 73-87 question. I bought a custom built tank from Rock Valley. http://www.rockvalleyantiqueautoparts.com/catalog.htm

At the time the truck was a long distance commute vehicle so I maxed out the space and the tank ended up with a 33 gallon capacity. Here’s a shot when it was first installed:

It looks really big (it is) but it doesn’t really show up with the truck put together as seen below:

URL=http://img41.imageshack.us/i/tank01.jpg/][/URL]

It has no straps. Instead, it has very heavy end walls with side flanges built in that bolt directly to the frame rails. It’s a super clean install. It’s fully baffled and was beautifully built. The downside being, it cost over $500 ten years ago. On retirement pay I couldn’t afford it today.

Another alternative is the following plastic 16 gallon tank from Summit Racing.

They recently installed this tank on a 1966 C10 on the TV show Trucks, and it looked pretty decent.

There's also this recent thread on the same topic:

Re: gas tank ideas?

Bought 64 c10 with 2 steel saddle tanks. Had to repair the mess. They were bolted throught the tanks and attached to the bedbox wood. Hanging moving all around. Me and my sons built our own tank straps and I bought felt for straps. Like it better then rear tank. My tanks hold 15 gals each. Besides that I now have a hidden receiver hitch, under a flip plate. Here is some pics of tanks. I saw some 15 gallon one that could be used from Summit parts.

I've been wondering about this. I want a hidden hitch, a rear tank (or at least out of the cab) and exhaust behind the rear tires and I'm just not sure there is enough room for that. I'm thinking about using the rear bumper from a 67-72 fleetside to hide things a little better and so the hitch won't have to be as long. I'm interested in seeing what options are out there for the gas tank.

Re: gas tank ideas?

Check out my build thread. Used a '49-'52 Chevy passenger car gas tank and mounted it in the frame behind the rear axle.

I have been following John's tank install for awhile and I think that is one of the cleanest ones I have seen. I am planning on doing mine that way but I have been debating between steel and plastic. Any thoughts on steel over plastic John?

Re: gas tank ideas?

1964C10,

I contemplated the plastic but I am a "steel" kind of guy. It's a snug fit so if the plastic is a bit bigger it might not fit as well.

Keep in mind that I had to trim the bottom flange of the frame, probably about 1/2", so the tank would drop out in the event it ever needed to be removed.

If you decide to do this swap let me know and I can post up some additional photos.

Re: gas tank ideas?

Thanks John, and I am with you on the steel part! I was actually thinking about this one:

http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...prod/prd45.htm

It's the "thinnest" one they have and my goal is to fab a bracket underneath that will still hold my original spare tire since it is only 7" wide.

Thanks for the offer! I will definitely look you up when the time comes.

Correction: I guess they changed sizes on their website, the one you have (steel) is now listed as being 1" thinner!

Re: gas tank ideas?

I used a stainless steel tank made by Rick's Hot Rod Shop. The idea of a plastic tank in such a vulnerable location didn't appeal to me.

TopFuel1966, What rear disc brake set up do you have there? Looks real nice.

Thanks........That's a 9" Ford rear end out of a late '70's Lincoln. It was narrowed about 2".

The tank I used in my 1966 Panel truck was out of a 1977 K5 Blazer - it's the larger of the two sizes offered for that year - 30 gallon capacity. It did require some work to get it to fit, I had to remove one of the factory cross braces (I replaced it with one of the gas tank cross braces off of the blazer which I spaced farther back to accommodate the larger tank). It does hang down lower in the rear than I would like - but I assume this is due to the tank being installed "backwards" to allow for me factory fuel filler location to work. One of these days I will drop the tank and replace it with another that I will rotate the filler neck 180 degrees to allow for the proper angle of the tank.

Re: gas tank ideas?

I would love to have one of those aluminum tanks designed for these trucks-but they are a little out of my budget.I like lakeroadsters set up with the car tank -im going to see if I can find out more about the summit tank that was on the show TRUCKS... thanks for the input!!
