Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

Well this will be my very first build thread on here. It is my 1965 Chevy C10 that I have owned since I was 16. It was my first and I will always have it.

My Grandfather bought it used in March 1967 in Fredericksburg, TX. It was his only truck from then until he gave it to me for my 16th Birthday in 1983. I will try to find a picture of it from back then. Anyway I painted it an drove it to high school and part of college, then in 1990, I got carried away with a repaint and ended up doing a complete frame off. I finished it in 1992 and took it to the Waco Street Machine Mini-Nationals that year and won the Jeff Lea Memorial Award for Best Truck! Well I got married a few months later and we used the truck as my Daily Driver, about a month later it was vandalized and I was devistated. My wife wanted me to redo it, but the insureance was not enough and we did not have the money. It sat for a long time after that with NO attention. Life got in the way, I moved out of state for a job (took it with me), we had a first boy in 1997. In 1998, I started a remake of it and enjoyed it for a year or so, then the motor gave out....I moved back to Texas in 2000 and have not touched it since other than moving to each house we lived in (4 time since 2000).

I attended the Goodguys Show at TMS in October and got the bug to redo the truck with my sons (one is 12 the other is 8). We plan to drive it next year...

Oh my lanta...what happened to your rig? Great story, but OLD BLUE needs some attention. I hope you and your boys have lots of fun working together on this project.

That was a sweet looking truck in '92. Do you have a plan yet on how you and your sons are going to build it this time? This is another cool story of a long time family owned truck. Keep us posted.

Thanks for all you comments, I have been looking forward to working on this one again for a long time. When my wife said that I should, I did not weight to start. I took some more pictures of the work we got done last weekend, but have not been able to post them yet. Hopefully tomorrow. There is more rust int he cab then I had hoped, but all of it can be repaired.

My plans are to get it running for now with steel wheels and hubcaps and let -he body stay as it is for now. I have a 350 I traded work for and a TH400 that will go in it for now. Wheels/tires will be 15x6 with 215/70-15 BFG Radial TA's in the front , 15x8 with 255/70-15 BFG's (or 15x10 with 285/70-15 if I can find some).

Long range is to paint it back to the orginal color both outside and inside. I was Baby Blue with the gold interior when my grandfather had it. Outside will appear stock, but the running gear and stance will be anything but.

Looks like I am not going to get any work done this weekend on the truck. I did manage to get the bed off with the help of a neighbor and another friend.

Well due to family spread out all over texas, we had our Chrismas with my folks on Saturday and my in laws on Sunday.

I got some gift cards to go toward this project. My first plans are to get it into the garage before the end of the year and start on redo the brakes/firewall/master cylinder area then onto the suspension....

I have off from Dec 24 thru Jan 3, so hopefully I get to work on it...

Despite its current state of disrepair, looks as though your truck is still in decent shape. Aside from the typical rust areas around the kick panel area, that looks to be a very solid truck (far better than those us Kentucky folks often have to work with). I too am working on a truck that I have inherited from my grandfather; and needless to say, I would have passed on it if it weren't for it's sentimental value. Anyway its good to see someone getting back in the saddle of this great hobby and keep the pictures of your progress coming

that's awesome. My dad had a '66 stepside that was bought in 67 from my uncle. My dad taught us about brakes, points, timing, and all the basic maintenance stuff. Your boys will never forget the skills and sometimes even fun they get while fixin' her up!!

No big block yet...

I did make some progress this week. I got it into my garage and started on the firewall around the master cylinder. Now I got to get some protection on it. I have a deadline to meet to have it running under its own power by mid March. So, I am doing what it takes to reach that goal. No major body work, no major changes at this time and only what it takes to make in run and stop safetly.

All that area on the frame is from the brake fluid leaking while it sat up. I plan on using some of Eastwoods products on this area for now.

Did a little more tear down today...I got the rear calipers off and ordered a rebuild kit for them. They are from a 1980 Lincoln Versailles. I also ordered some Eastwood Rust Encapsilator and Rust Converter to use in some areas along the firewall and frame until I have time to tear it all apart for real paint or powder coating...The cab has a lot of rust in the typical spots but I do not have the time in my deadline to work that over...The cab realy needs to be blasted to uncover all of the damaged areas.

Has anyone rebuild disc brake calipers? I am going to try it on the rears since I can not get rebuilt ones from the parts store for a decent price. Any suggestions?

Yes, It is a 9" out of a Lincoln Versailles with factory disc brakes.

I've not rebuilt calipers either. Earlier this year on one of the Powerblock shows, either Extreme 4X4, Musclecar, or Trucks, they showed how to rebuild them. I was surprised how simple it was. Pretty much disassemble, inspect for wear or pitting, then reassemble with new parts/seals. They used compressed air to pop the piston out.

yeah we used compressed air to pop the piston out (not on purpose) and we ended up having to buying a new caliper

Currently I am waiting on some parts to come in. I ordered seal kits for the Versilles calipers from the local O'Rielly's and some paints from Eastwood before I can go on with the brakes.

I did clean the used motor I have so that I can spray bomb it and get it ready to go in. I did not take any pictures of the before but the after I will get tonight if I feel up to it when I get home...it will be VERY cold in my garage...Supposed to be in the teens tonight.

I got my parts in yesterday. The radiator is similar to the ones on Summit and Jegs that others on here have used, but was only $139.99, I also got new valve covers and a timing cover and tab with bolts. The cover on the old motor is cracked and leaking and a plain steel one was the same cost as a chrome one. All of these parts in the photo are from Speedway Motors.


I also got my rust coatings from Eastwood and my rear caliper kits from the local O'Reilly's along with some brake lines and a new master cylinder. I hope to get something done Wednesday night. It has been real cold and my little space heater is not enought to warm up the garage. I think it might be ok tomorrow night, we'll see...

oh, also starting with post #15, I resized my pics a little smaller, what do you like the new size or the huge ones from the first few posts??

Man you could have had the Radiator dropped shipped to my house. Nice parts!! Does that radiator have a trans cooler? My guess is no.
