compression test ????

Hi all before I decide whether to just do head work or not I want to do a compression test. Can someone tell me where to look up what my compression is supposed to be. The truck set up for almost a year and smokes pretty bad. It also is getting gas in the oil, is it possible that the fuel pump is causing that?
Anyways I just wanna see if the rings are good before I start working on it and find that later

It seems like optimal compression is 120 psi on every cylinder. More of what you are looking for is even comp. on all cylinders. if it's got some that only read like 40 psi, and some that read 100 psi, you need to rebuild. The gas in the oil could come from the carb running too rich, or a leaky fuel pump.

A leakdown test is considered more accurate and should make it easier to determine what the problem is if there is one. ie - air leaking from the exhaust might be burned exhaust valve etc The cost of a leakdown tester is a bit higher but not outrageous - plus you need a compressor or access to one

Thanks guys I will look into the leak down tester, I just wanna know what I have before I start tuning everything and then find Ive got shot rings. The truck really runs rough right now but its a whole lot better than not running LOL. I want to find the source of the smoke before I mess around and screw it up worse

Pull all six or eight spark plugs, disconnect coil wire, take a dry compression reading on all cylinders, record findings, squirt 1oz of motor oil (wet test) in each cylinder and retest, record readings. As stated above your looking for the cylinders to be within 10% of each other. If you find a cylinder is much lower than the others on the dry test, and it does not increase with the wet test, chances are it's a valve problem, if it increases with the wet test, it's probably rings.
