newbie on the prowl

hi guys, my name is travis and this is my story....sorta
so i was working out in rendon area about a year ago and in the bushes about 20ft from the road i spotted an old truck so i wandered off into the weeds to see what it was and found what looks to be about a 64 gmc short bed. this thing is pretty straight and all there! it does have a little rust but not too bad. about the only thing i noticed missing was the radiator and the ac that used to be mounted under the dash. it has the factory v6 still in it. i decided to go to the nearest house today and see if i cant find something out as far as who owns it. this truck does not need to just sit out in a field and go to waste. its been on my mind all year long!

i talked to an older lady and she gave me the owners name, last known number and home address. she said she has tried to contact him several times lately but has had no luck in doing so. she said she is afraid he has either passed or has been placed in a retirement home. i called the number and it rang about 8 times then went to that annoying fax line noise.
soooooo, i guess i'll have to go by the address she gave me and see if he still lives there.

the lady also told me that he actually drove the truck from 35/rosedale area out to rendon where it sits now about 8 or 9 yrs ago because of the city code enforsment. she claims that somebody is stealing stuff off of it. i guess thats where the radiator and the ac unit that was mounted under the dash went.

ANYWAYS, i need some help with this. what should i do now? how can i find out if the owner has actually passed away? if he has, then how do i go about getting the truck legally? after all i realize i could possibly go snatch it out of the bushes and no one would ever know the difference. but then i dont want some stranger to show up on my front door step with johnny-law looking to get it back?
know what i mean?

heres some pics for those who like pics

Re: newbie on the prowl

It has license plates. Maybe check your local DMV for last registered owner or maybe DMV can advise you on your local laws on hardship titles or abandoned vehicles. Looks like a good start has the V-6 which is cool. Good luck with it. Is that a air conditioner or a compressor mounted up high?

I agree.... Get the plate number & see if you can find the VIN while your there. Take both to the DMV or local police & see if you can find any info.

Re: newbie on the prowl

That is a York AC compressor, probably a 210 model. They can actually be turned into an air compressor since they have their own oil reservior. They are popular with the offroad crowd as air compressors as the 210's put out some good air.

That truck has some good options on it. I would check with the DMV or the Police as said above.

Dang thats nice. I think its a 66 not a 64. Dont know anything when it comes to the owner situation but will tell you to do what ever it takes to get that thing.

Re: newbie on the prowl

I agree with contacting the DMV first.
If you know some some at a tow yard they could probably tow it off the property , placea lien on it, then "sell "it to you.
oh and I agree nice truck, save it!!!

Where is the vin located on these? The only thing I saw was a plate above the driver side door that was stamped with the following.

Here On the 60-66 main page there is a sticky thread by 1bad62prostreet that has all the vin codes pertaining to 60-66 trucks so you can look for frame numbers and cab numbers Different years were in different places

Very well worth pursuing, it is an original highly optioned truck, which is not a common find. You struck gold!

Re: newbie on the prowl

I could use the A/C pump, to convert into a air setup for my air ride system.

Nice find. I wish i had that patina finish on mine.
Instead, someone packed mine full of bondo and did a quicky spray job. But it is what it is.

Re: newbie on the prowl

i was thinking about using that pump for the same thing. if i get it i plan on keeping it all stock just the way it is. only changes will be lowered at first with black steels with whitewalls and bullit lugs. in the long run i would like to have it on air.
