Re: sbc 307?

if my truck had a good ol' 292, i wouldn't replace it with a 307. i like the 305 better because it has the same crank as the 350. the 307 has a 3-1/4 stroke and is basically a 327 with a smaller bore.....not much fun in a truck. my 72 burb 3/4 ton 2wd has a 307 with saginaw (column shifted) with 4.57 gear in the back. i will be putting a q-jet on it for the short term but i have a bad boy 406sbc to go in eventually. i will say that 4.57 gears are a little too steep around town, even with the that little engine. my dad pulled our 6,000 pound '71 holiday around with his 72 burb with 3.73 gears (automatic) for years so i know that the q-jet and 4.10 gear swap will be enough for the short term. right now my best gas mileage is 10-11mpg due to no overdrive but i have plans for adding the factory od to the saginaw in the future and that should get me up to 15-16 atleast and quieter highway cruising.
