I know that, on my 78, the key was needed to rotate the cylinder to remove the lock from the housing. Then the cylinder be opened and rekeyed. I had to drill my old cylinder to get it out, so no option to re-key at that point.

Seemed the same for the oem t handle on the 72, so to home depot and garage handle route I went. I do not mind the extra key, and 9 bucks is the right price.
