Re: going racing friday night
Some tracks are a lot tougher than others on tech. Depending on the event as well. Big thing, pay attention to the lane assigner. go where he/she tells you and don't move until they tell you to.
Just dry hop the rear tires to get the crud off them. Aquaint yourself with where you pick up your time slip after your run and get it quick or have a buddy pick it up for you and make sure the car# on it matches yours. Some places will not hold it for more than a few runs after if they are running a large program with a lot of cars. Get at least 2 runs in each lane if possible so you will have an idea how to dial the car in. White shoe polish, window cleaner spray, rags and a razor blade in case you need to change the dial in. Have someone walk next to you the first time you stage so you know where the beams are. Drive through them after you heat the tires and you are done at a lot of places. Helmet on and buckled when you pull into the burnout area. Class, and car number CLEARLY written on both side windows and windshield. Driver window all the way up when you pull into the burnout area. As stated don't use any water with street tires you will just lose it all on the line when it runs down between the tread. Also you will piss off the next guy who runs in your lane for leaving a gallon of water for him to start in. Be sure you know where to heat the tires. A lot of tracks have a cement pad where they want you to spin the tires as not to rip the asphault to shreds. Also. make sure you know where the turnoffs are at the big end of the track.. Common sense, but you don't want to be riding around at the big end during a large racing program not knowing where to turn off to return and forcing them to stop racing after the next set of cars have burned out and staged. Follow any speed limits on the return road. Revvving the hell out of the engine and speeding down the return will get you tossed from a lot of tracks. Watch people who race all the time, They do the same exact thing every run. Do the same thing every run, identical burnout stage the same way. |

Re: going racing friday night
Sorry you got rained out. I hate that. Around here it happens a lot in the spring & fall. We might get one or two good weekends out of the April opening month up here and the same for September.
One more thing to remember, if you are in the right hand lane don't forget to look out for the other car in the left hand lane when you make the turn onto the return road. You will have to cross over their lane to get there. Good luck and have fun. Don't forget to have a friend in the stands take pictures or video of your runs.

It weighs too much being a 3/4-ton 4x4 and the SM465 makes it hard to shift quickly. In a much lighter C-10 truck it would be quite a bit quicker probably 14.30's or so. The same engine in my Chevelle ran 13.50's.

Re: going racing friday night
So can I but not anywhere near as quickly as an M21, T-5 or T-56 car trans.
With my Camaro I could shift with my foot to the floor on the throttle. Power shifts are brutal on the parts but the shifts can happen fast enough to not have to lift at all. Needless to say I broke quite a few transmissions.

Also tell the starter you are new to drag racing and he'll help you get staged properly. Nothings worse than a newbie trying to stage on the back tires

Re: going racing friday night
we get them all for free.ppl just throw them away or give them to us..
but just flip the front pully over you might have to cut it in half and do some welding to that pully.and for the back go down to your hardwear store and buy a pully and put it on. get like a 2.5 in pully.and a belt. that set up with be good for 30 mph. oh take off the hole brake.with it on it slows down the rearend and just melts the pads(you dont need brakes anyways ) but thats all u need oh and take the deck off too lol

Re: going racing friday night
nice ive allways liked the briggs ohv motors they dont rev as high but you get more displacement.(also the hole motor and head is alum.)i bore out the intake and clean up the head.me make a tap so we can change the timing and that helps out alot in the higher rpms.for a carb i like to use my honda atc carb becuse it has bigger jets.
but ive blowen up a few (ive got smart and put a tach on the motors) i got pics on the other computer ill put up later
