Re: Lets See Some Winter Traction Solution Photos

I try filling the bed of the one ton dually with snow..no effect on the suspension the tires just spin and spin. I'm thinking of getting some snow chains for it. I moved back to DC from New England thinking I was done with snow, sold the Jeep thinking no need for 4 wheel drive, had to fight the dually being stuck on ice 3 times now.

That is awesome. There is a Chevrolet car at about the 7 minute point. Did you watch all of the video? I see one major problem with that. If you fall off, your hamburger meat. It is a great idea, but it definitely needs some guarding on the tops of those spinning drums to prevent serious injury.

Does anyone use studded snow tires? Those things work great - When we lived in Utah in the mountains, they made a two-wheel-drive like a four-wheel-drive. I think they were illegal after April, though.

Those tubs all framed in are the best solution.Weight is easy to add.The problem is having it stay put.Around here, you shovel your bed full of snow and you might be hauling a glacier for a couple months.I clean it all out before it does the refreeze.
He's in Colorado, that's nothing, it melts off and is gone in 3 days so that's not a problem.

We use a 5 gallon pail (with a lid on it) full of sand and tie it into each rear corner of the box without using up bed space (placed on a gunney sack so it wouldn't slid out or around).

It doesn't snow too often around here.
But my '71 stays full of firewood all season long.
I heat with it and sell it also.

Re: Lets See Some Winter Traction Solution Photos

Go with proper snow or winter tires
http://www.bridgestonetire.ca/tirese...?productID=503
http://www.bridgestonetire.ca/images...k_W965_b60.tif

then if that not enough
-4x4 with above or so tires
-studded tires if legal (BC they are)
-chains

and if you got money to burn and want to extend the cool factor....

now if your stuck .....your stuck!!!!!!!

I want one NOW!!! I guess that`s what they meant when they said,"Ford, the better idea".That one always baffled me.I figure what they were trying to say is,"GM,the best idea".But,is that a Ford product of just mounted on a Fordson tractor that they are calling a Fordson Snow-Motor?They are calling the car a Chevrolet Snow-Motor.I think it`s a conversion, like NAPCO 4wd.

I lived in Arizona and it snowed it`s ass off.I was up in God`s country on the rim outside of Flagstaff. There are parts of Maryland where it doesn`t snow,at least it`s really rare.We enjoy life all year`round, too. And we have plenty of water.Grass grows all by itself.

Re: Lets See Some Winter Traction Solution Photos

500 or so pounds of plow on the front, 490 pounds (seven, seventy pound bags) of sand in the back works for me. If it gets really hairy I chain up the FRONT tires. Haven't ever been stuck in the snow.

I have gotten hung up more than once breaking through the lake to land transition but that is another story for another post.

Is that a load of locust in the middle picture? You guys burn that stuff? Around here it is worth big money to the furniture makers. Large walnut could fetch even more.

I go to a parking lot where they are plowing, and have someone fill my box with snow. It weighs about 1000 lbs, and when it warms up it goes away by itself. No money, no mess, and no lugging and storing heavy junk.

Done that before, when I had new tires on a 2wd pickup. Thing was a tank until stuff got deep or up hill.

True, probably a conversion. FEAKING COOL either way!

That's actually shagbark Hickory in the pic.
There aren't too many places around here in the market for
cabinet-grade material.
So, up the chimney it goes.

Re: Lets See Some Winter Traction Solution Photos

hey coloradosean2009:

i have a wood jig in my 87 dodge ram 50 (mitsubishi) 2wd 5spd that was built by my grandfather. he had a several mini pickups in his later years and his last 2 were a long bed and then a short bed ram 50....the shortbed is now in my possession. i used the truck through last winter. anyway...the jig holds 6 cement blocks and it makes a difference in road grip. i just had all seasons on the truck (studded snows on the rear would have been preferable) and managed to get by for the most part. i hope to put in a locking rear with softer gearing when i restore the truck to use as a winter beater/fill in for my 72 suburban that will be kept away from the salt.

Back in the mid to late 80s, my little bro bought a 1971 Ford LTD (Large Transportation Device) that had a pair of studded snow tires on the back. It was summertime when he had it. He had a good time peeling out on the pavement with the studs, sending pieces of road flying! One day an old timer cop pulls him over. He says,
"Son, I heard you coming down the road from two blocks away"
and wrote him up for running studs in the summer.

I heard about someone mounting saddle tanks in there truck with a few drain plugs. Filled them with sand. Kept bed free and still tons of weigth. Never done it. But sounded cool
