Well here is my offical build post...It will take some time to get this thing done but I have time...

The first pic is of the trip to get it.. ruff weather in GA on 2/28/09

second pic is of it following me home...

Third pic is of Tonka who just had to get in it as soon as it got home... He does not care for new cars... Smart dog...

You do have some work in front of you.

The floor of the cab appears to have been redone but I do not see the front cab mounts and it appears the rear cab mounts are not installed from the way it is sitting on the frame. The work on the inner left kick panel and cowl will require some time, effort and money.

You might keep an eye open for a donor cab. From what I can tell yours will need all four corners redone and the floor mounts redone. There is probably more cancer we cannot see.

Having been through this before I can only light a candle for you. Seriously that cab may be too far gone if you do not have the tools and fab skills to save it. Paying someone else to do the work will add up to large $$.

Good thing is Like to fab stuff so this part won't be to bad for me.. I am not looking forward to redoing the front suspension but It is on the table... I figure about 12k to get it back on the road and decent.. not show worthy but decent....

Sounds close. There are old trucks all over the place though and you might find one in better shape to use a donor. You will be ahead of the game if you do. One of those lessons learned from my project.

Well I have built and fabbed a bunch of VW's over the years and they all rust... Bad... I don't mind that part as this is an outlet for me to get away from computers.. i am an application analyst by trade and need this outlet... Yea I could save money and time by getting a diffrent truck but this ugly thing is home and I just don't want to scrap it...

As someone just getting started on my build as well... It just takes a lot of love, time, patience... some blood, sweat, and a fair bit of coin. The skills to build make it alot easier and you seem to have those. Don't be put off, just work one area at a time and try not to fret the whole thing at once.

After all... we love these trucks and it's the reason why we put our blood and soul into them! (it certainly isn't for financial returns!).

I replaced almost every panel on my truck so this does not look bad to me at all. If you have experience with replacing patch panels this is not bad, and if you don't, you will have the experience by the time your done with your project.

Be careful metal work can be addictive, at least for me it is. Have fun and ask questions.

I bought the same unit last spring and now have my truck about down to bare metal. It took 12 or 13 bags of soda but I liked the results. I really liked how it got into the nooks and crannies around the windshield and wrap around rear window. It is however very very messy. I live on a ranch so most of the soda blew away but if you have neighbours look out.

One of the problems with soda is making sure you get it out of the nooks and crannies and wash it off before you primer and paint. It also acts as a bit of a protection against flash rust if you don't wash it off right away which helps. As soon as it warms up I am going to wash my truck off and treat it with Picklex 20. That will allow me to work on the steel and not worry about primer for a long time - as long as it stays inside.
