I need a tranny

Hey,

In my jim i have a 454 with a 4 speed granny LOW with a np205 and 373 12 bolt axles. Down the highway with 37 inch tires, Im at about 2800 doing 80 KM's... I really dont need the low gear since I dont wheel the truck that often so im just looking for some better fuel economy and so I can go abit faster on the highway. I really dont want to change hte gearing in my differential. What kind of 5 speed transmissions are out there? Would this solve my problem? I have a 700R4, but whats the fun in that , and i already have a new clutch kit in this beast.

thanks
-Rhys

Re: I need a tranny

An NV4500 conversion would be your best bet. It's a much like the SM465 you have, but with a 5th gear that's overdrive. It's tough enough to handle a 454.

If you don't abuse it or tow over 5000 lbs, a NV3500 will survive. You can easy rebuilt one yourself.

Re: I need a tranny

What is 80 kmh? I only know mph, but with thos tires and rear end 2800 rpm should be at least 60mph.... 2800 rpm is the sweet spot on the highway if its hilly too.

Re: I need a tranny

You should be turning less Rs than that at 50 mph. I have close to the same setup as you but with 35s and 4.10s, turning about 2800 at 70. Check this site out, good info for gears and such...www.4lo.com.

Not to get off topic but what does your rear window sticker mean it sure looks like a cool design. And your truck is so clean!

hahaha, just till i can afford some 35's, was just to clear the 37's to play in the mud abit

it was a 4 inch lift with 33's, gonna get some 35's on those slotted mags and back to a 4 inch lift, just $$ is the problem.

picked these 37's on 15x10 steels with 30% tread for 200$!

too much fun!

Re: I need a tranny

You can only get halfway decent mpg with a lift, big tires and an old truck. If your getting low teens there is no room for improvement imo.

Try these folks. You have to drill into the site, but they provide good diagrams and rebuild kits.

You definitely have much more gear than 3.73's. By the RPM you are turning you have 6.20 something gears. Or you are stuck in low range in the transfer case with 3.08 gears. Nothing else adds up gearing and tire size wise.

That NV3500 won't last long with a big block and 37" tires in something that gets used off road. I broke one in a friends Jeep with 33" tires and a six cylinder this summer doing just one power shift.

I barley ever wheel the truck right now, putting my old 33's back on soon, how long do you think this would last? Any way I can build this tranny stronger?

Re: I need a tranny

I would check your gearing out that just don't add up man. Those nv3500s don't hold up to much abuse my buddy was running a pretty stock SB and 33"s he broke his like the 3rd time he took it out just messing around nothing to hardcore. Let alone you want to turn 35"s and a BB in front.

You have to have 5.13s. I don't even thinbk that could have come in a 1/2 ton.... It just doesnt add up.

I have 5.13's and just under 32" tires with the same SM465 and NP205 he is running and at the same 80 kph I am right at 2700 rpm.

With his 37" tires he would be at just over 2300 rpm at the same speed.

He either has gears I don't think they make for the 12-bolt (something about 6.20 gears) or he has 3.08 gears and the transfer case is in four low.

Nothing else adds up.
