door skins.

i thought id show some pictures for people wanting to know how to do the bottoms of the doors.. i skinned the inside and outside today.. first step is to cut the outside where you want it then take a grinder and grind the edges then it comes right off... the on the inside there are a few braces you cut the spot welds there.. and then cut the spot welds on the sides and then the inside comes off.. im sorry i dont have great steps but then the next thing is i test fitted it all and basically put the puzzle back together im going to leave an overlap on the inside to give me a bit to weld on.. heres some pics.. enjoy.. got about 6 hours total on it.. ive never skinned a door and so far its a piece of cake..

Re: door skins.

thanks for your time and showing us how you did this. It is on my list of things to do as well and seeing how you did it make it just a bit more doable for me I hope.

Re: door skins.

Did you do any type of coating on the inside of the door when you were done? If so what and how? I need to do the same thing. Thanks for the info.

Re: door skins.

Looks great!

Did the detail lines all line up for you? Did you have to do any massaging to get the lines all lined up on the inside, like some of the older threads showed? Also, how did the gauge of the patches compare to the original door?

Re: door skins.

its the same gauge.. i got them from keystone automotive.. and i just used undercoating on the backsides. and the lines matched up fairly well on the inside i made a slit and then massaged it and welded it back up but it was a very simple task.. for an 18 year old that never done it before i say i did an alright job.. my boss says if u can skin the bottom of a door u can skin a whole door because he says this is harder

Re: door skins.

I have a full doodskin to replace. Do I grind the folds all around the door, or is there a way to pry them up?

if not reusing the panels just take a flap disc and grind the edge down. Takes hardly any time. too much work to pry up. We do that on old and new cars

Re: door skins.

It's not that bad v-dog grind outside edge with grinder keep it flat you will see start to separate go all the way around like this and pull off outer door skin and on the inside there will be a small strip left take a pair off plyers and work it off

Re: door skins.

Am I grinding the edge by the window felt? Also the side where the door opening meets the cab, do I grind at an angle or just grind the edge down?

No. You just grind the bottom and up both front and back. Just grind it flat 90 degrees to edge. You will see it comes off rather easy after the three sides are gone. Like said i use a flap disk cause it does not make as many sparks but a solid disc works great of even a HD sander with real course grit will work. You will see when it is ground thru, you will have three layers of metal.
Mike that used to work here could skin a door in 45 minutes when he was sober
