67 power steering question

a friend of man just picked up a 67 long bed fleet. its a 6 cylinder 3 on the tree. he planning a few up grades, but wants to get it original as possible. he wants to add power steering, but i have hear some of you guys talk about a "dimple" in the frame. what excally is this? 67 only? my 69 is manual steering and all the 67-72 i have owned has been manual. not really sure how to help/ answer his questions. thanks guys

Re: 67 power steering question

The area behind the power steering box on most 67's and 68's (4x4's) is flat. THis won't allow a newer style box to be mounted. Newer frames had an indentation (dimple) in the frame to allow the box to sit flush. There were also raised mounting pads that it bolted to. You can add a 60-66 power steering conversion plate or make spacers for it to work.

It will be harder for him to find the correct power steering pump brackets... some have integrated and non-integrated heads for the 250/292 6 cylinders

Re: 67 power steering question

thanks for the info msgross. so really the "dimple" will be the least of his worries. finding the brackets will be the mountain hes gonna have to climb. the truck was his wives grandfathers truck. he owned it since 1973. he wants to get it going again, and the steering would make it a little easier for her to enjoy her grand dads old pickup.

Re: 67 power steering question

Tell him to be sure and get ALL the pulleys from the donor as well as the brackets. He may want to snag the alt also in case of pulley differences there.I see more people have problems with these from not getting the pulleys than any thing else.I know I'm one who forgot.

Re: 67 power steering question

guys i really appericate the info. if we could locate a later model truck (73-79) that is a 6 cylinder with power steering would this stuff work? like the brackets, pump, box etc...? guy here in town got a junkyard with lots of old stuff, quite a few 67-72 and 73 up but alot of the "thats what i need items" have been picked over. maybe a long shot but i love a trip to a junkyard.

Re: 67 power steering question

outback truck parts has a bracket that bolts to the frame that will allow you to run a steering box from a 73 and up
