Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
You get the new water pump on it? Is it running good? Have you drove it? How does it drive? When you cruising it to work? Are you working on it now??

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
well.....
I swapped my pump, warmed her up and set my timing to 0 degrees with the computer timing plug disconnected. it won't hardly run at 0* but it runs ok with the computer controlling timing. I think maybe my balancer has slipped. I think I will advance the timing a couple degrees and see how she runs then. I also don't have output from my alternator. It is a CS series alternator and I know it needs resistance in the "L" circuit to output. The only wire I have found that appears to go to the alternator has very low resistance in the circuit. Every diagram I have come across shows a brown wire going through a bulb in the cluster to the alternator, well guess what? I have no brown wire and no charge indicator bulb in my cluster ![]() I guess I'm going to run to Radio Shack and pick up a couple resistors today and see if I can make it work. I managed to drive it around the block though....I knew I shouldn't with out the alternator charging, but I just had to ![]() ![]() I know it will be worth it in the end, but geezzz, the devil is truly in the details!!! ![]() Quote:

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
![]() That sucks, do you need an alternator or is it just the wiring?? I think i have an extra alternator at the shop.. May have a balancer too ![]() I just figured you were ignoring me again ![]() ![]() Last edited by scotts62; 05-23-2010 at 10:49 AM. |

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
I'm pretty sure it is the wiring, the crazy part is this is the correct alternator for this year harness.....I just don't know why it doesn't match any of the diagrams. All the diagrams I have found for the 87-91 R/V trucks and the 88-98 C/K series trucks all have a brown wire running to the alternator.....The only "extra" wire I have that could go to the alternator appears to be pink with a black trace (or stripe).

The plug i gave you was off a 90'..
Ok so your wiring has it but the plug for the alternator plugs dont.., right? |

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
no, the plug is right I believe, I just don't seem to have the correct circuit in the 'burb harness, So I'm gonna have to add some resistors to make it work

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
Have you thought about fixing the alternator problem by putting a one wire on it? Just a suggestion they are pretty cheap and all you have to do is run a wire directly to the battery

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
Is there maybe a difference in alternators betwenn the C/K trucks, and the burbs? Since they were kind on different platforms at this time. Maybe that is where the discrepency is in the diagrams?

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
nope, the alternators are all the same as far as i can tell, just different amp outputs. they used this same alt up until the LS came out. and I believe the internals are basically the same, just different case and plug...oh and they put the fan inside the case too.
I can't imagine the burb having a different wiring schematic, they just add notes like only with aux heater ect. but who knows....

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
Joe,
I had to run a wire to switched power (from my fuseblock) and put a bulb inline to it to the wire in the plug, them the big wire to the battery. I went around all of the other wiring that was there, and it works great. My office manager and her husband ran an alternator/starter rebuilding business for years, and he set me straight. You only need the switched power to excite the alternator. I just ran a peanut bulb and socket (194) and put it under the dash. The bulb provides the resistance the alternator is looking for. Also, the bulb goes out right after the truck is started.

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"
Thanks for the info Jon!
I wasn't sure if a 194/168 would do it or not. I ohmed one and it only showed 3 ohms. Good to know that's enough. ![]() Turns out my alternator is bad ![]() I'm headed out to see if Scott has another in his parts stash ![]()
