Needing some tech help here....

I am getting ZERO replies over in electrical. I figured I'll post here and see if someone can help.....

I'd say the starter is the culprit. Drawing a lot of current and getting the wires hot. Usually caused by worn bushings. First, check all the connections going to the starter, make sure your ground cable is good and has good clean connections.

The last starter I bought was about $40-$50 at local auto parts. I'd get it complete with the solenoid.

One more thing. The strange part was the wire getting hot when the key was "on" and not in "ignition" or start mode.

Did the lock and cylinder fix the problem?

forgot to mention: I would have posted the original one in the engine/transmission site since it was a failure to crank the engine and start the vehicle. But that's just me.

The ign switch did nothing for me.

I have checked the grounds, and my connections are good all around. I am wondering if I need to see about replacing the connector on the back as well....it is looking a bit worse for wear after last night's meltdown.

I might go ahead and try bump starting it later tonight to try and get it home. I wish I had more time to get this fixed as another big snow storm is about to pound us this weekend.

What I meant is -does the ignition battery wire still get hot by just turning the key to the on position and not the start position?

If it doesn't, go with the starter. Make sure your wires didn't burn up, though. Check the electrical section FAQ for a great color coded wiring diagram of the engine compartment if you need.

Take the starter off and have Auto Zone or another local auto parts test it. They do it for free. However, let me caution you that it doesn't alway tell you if you have a bad armature since they don't put much of a load on it.

So if you have 40-50 bucks laying around go ahead and get one.

yeah it sounds like a short in the starter solenoid
