Dash pad alternatives? Pics?

Hi folks, the dash pad in my '72 is beyond trashed, metal backer exposed in a couple of places. I've recovered these for myself and others before when the foam was at least existent, but this one is dead and gone.

I know I can get a junk yard and recover, or order a repop for decent prices, but I'm wondering if something else might be done. I've seen a couple just painted with open slots, has anyone done that or done something different?

I filled in some cracks in one once with some spray foam and then shaped it with a knife. Might work for you. Electric turkey slicer works wonders with spray foam!

I've done similar, but this one is GONE Rob, parts of it were falling off as I removed it and some of it was too distorted with rock hard vinyl... basically, not enough left or stable enough to attempt to rebuild.

Re: Dash pad alternatives? Pics?

I think when I do mine, I'm going to remove all the foam and just have the metal frame covered in the same material as my seat. Haven't seen it done that way yet. Maybe there's a reason...

Re: Dash pad alternatives? Pics?

Could probably make a nice finished wood lip for it. It's pretty much straight across, so straight boards could work with a taper on the end.

Re: Dash pad alternatives? Pics?

you could find one with a little bit better foam and cover it in fiberglass. Trevor

Really interesting idea, I bet there's a number of other places some nice wood trim would go... I'm going to have to give that one some serious thought, especially if I find a deal on cross members for a wood bed conversion...

That looks sharp! Did you build it up at all or is that just the contours of the existing dash, minus the slots?

On all the ones I've done, the place that redoes my seats for me, just recovers them with the same cloth as the seat. They always look great

i welded up the slots as close to the roundness of the dash as i could. and used body filler to finish it off.
