Gear Vendors... Confused

Someone mentioned this in one of my previous threads and I've been researching them for a week or so. I'm confused on exactly what they are and do. Is it an entire trans or a "bolt-on"? I read there site and I'm confused on exactly what they do as well. I want the sum up of what they say because I do not understand. Are they adding gears to the transmission or is there something else going on? The ratio chart they have says, 1st, 1st over, 2nd, 2nd over, etc. Is the "over" a completely different gear than 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th? Please help me understand this thing...

Thanks,
Nova

Edit- How do they accomplish "gear splitting"? This subject is raking my brain...

Now that I understand this correctly. I see that you are looking at the overdrive unit. All automatics are a three speed basically with the 4th speed (overdrive) built into the tailhousing of the trans. That is what the vendor is, a replacement tailshaft that gives you 4th gear basically.

Re: Gear Vendors... Confused

it's a seperate unit that goes between the trannny and the rear. tthe most common way to use is let the tranny work thru its regular cycle then shift into overdrive.for cruiseing speed

It sounds to me that it is all electronic. Nothing to push, pull, or yank. Has it's own stand alone harness just like an electronic overdrive trans.

Re: Gear Vendors... Confused

If I remember right the gear vendor unit bolts onto the back of your existing transmission.

I think their is another company that offers a similar unit.

A lot of people in the Recreation Arena use them in their trucks and motor homes to give better range of gears for pulling power and better mileage.

At one time I thought about going with one in my '92 GMC K-3500, but the cost of the unit installed stopped that. I soon realized it would take a long time to see a return on the investment.

They say it's good because the three speed transmissions are built better than a four speed. so by adding this vendor you get the strength of a three speed with four speeds.

I'd just swap in a 4L80E or 4L100E for the cost.

There's more to it than that.

You can split each gear too if you want making your 3 speed into a 6 speed.

First gear- first gear OD- Second gear- Second gear OD- Third gear- Third gear OD.

Or you can just let your trans shift 1-2-3 then OD

A lot of guy put an extra dimmer switch in the floor to control the GV unit between straight and OD setting so they can play with it at will.

A Gear vendors overdrive is a two speed planetary gearset with ratios of 0.7:1 and 1:1. This allows you to split ratios in any in any gear turning a 3 speed turbo 400 into a six speed transmission. The unit replaces the tailshaft.

I'm running a set of 4.10 gears in the rear end. This unit effectively allows me to switch from a 4.10 rear to a 3.07. Gives the best of both worlds...1800 rpm at 70 mph on the freeway in 3rd or launch at 4.10.
