If it still has its factory point style ignition, I would also suspect the coil. If it is only missing on one cylinder I would suspect wires.

It sounds like your buddy would do himself a favor by doing a good old fashioned tune-up. And replace the ignition coil and wires. The old stuff can all go in one box that will easily slide into the bed for emergency road-side repairs.
