Project Ru5tyNut5

So it would appear that I'm about to start a new project, I'm going to try to take a lot of pics of the process but they'll be cell phone pics. I guess I'll start with the first shot I took of it last night.

Re: Project Ru5tyNut5

Got all the crap out of the back of it last night, different wheels with tires that hold air on the back, and got it drug out of where it is in the pic. It's a long bed for now, I'll be changing that. found another one to get the body parts I need off of, just need some money to pay for it. More to come soon I hope.

Re: Project Ru5tyNut5

I'm going to start with Zing the frame in the rear for sure, and probably the front too. I've got everything to bag it, so it will be bagged. depending on what I find for a cab and whatnot I may leave the original paint. I'll probably just paint some stock steel wheels black with some fat white walls and I'll probably have to do a small body drop. I'm using the motor, trans, rear-end, and front suspension parts from my '76 on it so it will be converted to a 5 lug. I've loved following your build Alan, but I don't have the skill, money, or time to build something that nice. I'm going to do what I can with what I got, it won't be the prettiest or coolest, but it will be mine and that's just the way I want it. I have to thank Chevytrucknut from the forum here, and Dan from Sick Industries for all of their help. I also have to thank you Alan as I've been watching your thread for some time and have learned a lot. The same goes for puropedo, I've learned a ton from his build thread also. last but not least, I need to thank Smokey and of course the bandit, without those guys my childhood would have been a little more boring. :-)

Thanks for the Kudos. Sounds like a good plan. As you probably know this is my first restoration. Other than body work, (which I can still learn new tricks) I'm learning a lot here as well.

Re: Project Ru5tyNut5

Welcome.

Have you considered using an aftermarket crossmember like Porterbuilt's Dropmember or *****************'s P-51? They're kinda' expensive but far easier than z-ing the front. I'm puting one in my 63 and it will lay out on a 29.5" tall tire. They also move the front wheels in some so you don't have to completely butcher your fenders.

Good luck with the build and keep us updated.

I'm trying to avoid the whole catalog built truck thing, I'd rather cut the frame to bits and put it back together how I want it. and, Z'ing the frame is basically free, just a little time and labor. since the truck is a long bed now I'll have 20" of extra frame rail from each side to use as filler so I don't even have to buy any metal.

Re: Project Ru5tyNut5

found another '65 I may buy for the cab, hood, and fenders....He wants $200 for the truck and has a clean title for it so I'm strongly considering it.

*this thread gets way off topic for a bit but gets back on track around page 9*

Re: Project Ru5tyNut5

well, I've been working a little on my '76 for now, gotta finish bagging it at least before I do anything else since I'm pretty much already in the process. I was going to take the drivetrain and all the bag stuff from the '76 for the '65 but I think I want both so that's kind of where it's at right now.

Re: Project Ru5tyNut5

before I started cutting anything, keep in mind I've never done this before so go easy

slots cut to slide the notch in

got one side welded in, don't worry, I'm going to clean it up and box it in back there so it won't be so ugly, don't have to do that right now though.

I have both notches in and have that pic in my phone, but I don't have the bridge in yet. gotta do that and then the 4-link and then start making rear bag mounts.
