This may have been asked some where on the forums but I'm wondering:

What material Is the outer grill on a 1972 made of?

I believe its aluminum, Is that correct?

Yes, it is anodized aluminum, and the anodized plating is what makes it difficult to polish.

You need to strip the coating off and polish back out to get`em all shiny again.

I'm more interested in welding it than polishing it for the time being...

But it seams I'll have to strip the anodized plating before any welding can be done.
