are the 73-87 dash pads interchangeable?

I have an 84 truck and my dash is dry rotted to crap. I was planning on fiberglassing it and painting it but I like the shape of the 70's dash boards better. I have a friend who has a dash in better shape then mine out of a 75 truck he offered me and I was wondering if I refinished the 75 dash would it fit along with the vents still working?

thanks to anyone who can help.

Greg

your vin tag will be covered, not all the dash clip will work and the bezel won't fit the greatest

'78-'80 pads do have the VIN opening.

Hmm, didn't know that. I wonder why GM went to the trouble of moving it just a little bit.

Re: are the 73-87 dash pads interchangeable?

I did the swap and I am using my 82' gauge bezel for now with the older style pad. It doesn't look to bad, but it would definitely look better with the matching year bezel...other than that...it fit on in there good with no problems or modifications . You can see in the pic, if you use the wrong bezel it will have a small gap between the top of the bezel and the pad. I just stuck a peace of rubber stripping in the gap to make it less noticeable for now.

Re: are the 73-87 dash pads interchangeable?

I forgot about the bezel being different. You can use an older bezel with a newer (81-up) dash pad and it will work fine; the later bezel does stick out with the older pad. 84 is the first year with the relocated headlamp switch and wipers on the column, too.

Re: are the 73-87 dash pads interchangeable?

Thanks for all the help guys. Ill be sure to grap the bezel for the dash.

Oldschool82- I like the aluminum you put on the dash, I'm planning something similar with mine but will have different vent holes.

Thanks...yea I just whipped that up in a hurry. I don't care for the way the vents look on it.
