Lord please forgive me

Well I took my ole 65 to Plains, GA for the annual Bobby Salter bike and car show. Very nice show with only one other 1960 - 72 Chevy/GMC truck. I did not enter my truck in the show, not quit done yet.

Now for my sin. I have been having electrical problems - must be a ground but it is frustrating. Truck starts right up but when you shut it off it needs a jump or sometimes it has to sit for a while. Battery has a full charge, alternator is working fine. Could it be the starter getting hot? A ground?

Well long story short I stopped for lunch and came out and nothing. No click nadda. So I ask my friend for a jump. I had to get a jump from a FORD. Is my truck no beyond repair? Could it have gotten an STD? Is it now doomed forever? Does anyone make anything to cure the infection of the FORD juice?


Back to my original concerns what do you all think? Ground wire, hot starter, or ?????

I would clean all your connections first, and then verify grounds. It sounds like it just isn't getting enough juice, and bad connections or insufficient grounding would be my first spots to check.

Starter going out is my guess. When she is hot, the starter just doesn't have enough "oomph" to overcome the added resistance of the heat to spin the engine over. Fixed mine by going with a new high torque mini starter... Same symptoms as yours until I replaced the starter.

I had a similar thing, problem with the sbc starter.. a loose wire inside was sometimes making contact, and I couldn't start, then 1/2 hour later it would fire right up.

I once had intermittent starter problems on a 283, and discovered the case bolts had come loose. I'd never seen that happen before, these are the two long bolts that go through the case from rear to front holding the end plate on. One usually has a bolt head and the other has an exposed stud. Just something else to check that is free to fix if it happens to be the problem.

I would give the battry a good spray down from the infection of the bad word.

I'm with everyone else, check the starter out.

I'm guessing starter; I had a similar problem on my 76 Chevy truck. I had re-built the starter (brushes & solenoid) but the problem was the bearings were getting "wallowed out" so on a hot engine the armature didn't spin true ...in fact it tried going sideways before it tried spinning. SO I went to an electrical rebuild place and got a starter that was rebuilt correctly, the guy there explained the problem. I never had the problem again as long as I own the truck.

Most of the delco starters that I have had to work on for this problem were repaired by replacing the end cap bushing for the armature. They are an oil inpregnated bushing that is still available at most parts houses. Just remove end plate, use a long nosed pliers to remove old bushing and replace with new, add a dab of grease into bushing cup before inserting armature shaft in and remounting end cap...........................Kirby
