Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

Got the motor stripped down yesterday, now it's ready to get cleaned up, painted and do a cam swap. Still need to purchase the cam and spring kit along with a fbody oil pan. Going to do a new oil pump and timing chain too, makes sense to do it while I'm in there.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

Today I got my LS6 intake cleaned up and painted. I sprayed on 3 coats of Duplicolor plastic adhesion promoter and then sprayed it with Duplicolor Semi Gloss Black engine paint. Turned out really nice.

Thanks and congrats on your LS purchase.

That was the same plan I had when I was looking for an LQ4. What cam are you going with from Brian Tooley.

Thanks Rob, I just wish I would have done this a lot sooner. I talked myself out of doing the swap twice previously, should have just went with my initial instinct but at the time I was unsure if I could handle the swap being an LS newb.

Looking good as always. I also got springs, lifters, trunion upgrade, pushrods, timing chain, and ported oil pump. I'm going to go ahead put a new water pump and thermostat in as well.

Yeah I'm doing a new water pump and Holley accessory brackets to clear the LS6 intake. Most likely going to run a 2010 and up Camaro water pump so that the inlet matches my radiator and I can run my truck balancer. I'm going to wait on the lifters for now, I'm not going to pull the heads until I can afford to do a set of ported ones, so I'll wait and do the lifters then. I have been talking with Martin at Tick Performance about a cam for my LQ9. I'm looking at his SNS TorqueMax line of cams and he suggested I run the LS2 stage 2 cam. I want a cam that makes good torque and power without losing to much on the low end and what I have seen from these cams on the dyno it is exactly what I'm looking for. Plus I want a cam that has a nice lopey idle. Should be fun to drive now I just need to get my tax return money back so I can order everything

Not sure yet. Either the Stage 3 or 4. Going to wait until I get heads and go from there. There's a slight chance I may change my mind once or twice on things between now and then.

To reference post #2728. My LS had 216,000 and still had the cross hatches had no lip too. I crammed it, and replaced gaskets. I'm ready to get It started. I'm getting closer.

Thanks Mike, now I just have to focus on actually finishing this truck so I can drive it at some point in my life.

Awesome, it will be a long time before I get to fire this motor up.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

I saw the comment about ported heads. I have quite a bit of porting experience, although it is mostly on Mopar heads. www.shadydellspeedshop.com Note: my brother Ryan is the one who runs the shop now, and builds the engines there, not me. I started the shop with my brother and worked at it in the past. But anyhow, I am thinking about putting an LS motor in my next project, and would love to port a set of LS heads to see what I could do with them. If you are interested, we might be able to work something out. Talk to me offline if you want. dkj103@psu.edu

I appreciate the offer but that's a little more then I want to do to the motor right now. I don't plan on pulling the heads off at this time.

Thanks Justin, I have a question for you. When I ordered my Entropy Rad, I just ordered the radiator without the fan kit. Do you guys sell just the fan kit to fit the radiator, I didnt see it listed on your site or maybe I missed it.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

Got the grime cleaned off the 6.0 and decided to mock up my valve covers and intake to get an idea of what it will look like. I plan to paint the block, heads and valve covers body color with the black intake and accessories. Should look pretty good.

Motor looks Stellar, Bud! Going to look even cooler with some liquid color...

I'm glad I'm not the only one with those valve covers. If I'm seeing correctly, I think we have the same coil pack mounts. They are sitting on the HF hose reel box in the back ground. Have you figured out where you are going to mount them?

I like the valve covers. Where are planning on mounting the coil packs?

I'm currently leaning towards the Holley coil covers.

Oh, I almost forgot. Before you get those VC bolted down for good. Make sure you check the inside for any casting flashing. Mine had a couple of small pieces in the top of them that if knocked into the motor could have been Bad News Bears.
