Cool find. Those trucks are probably more dependable than the clothing they sell

Yup the grill is different and I think the front fenders are too. There are two threads in this forum with pics.

Re: Old Navy 50's era trucks for sale
The cabs are the same between the Chevy and GMC. Even the fenders are too for the most part. The grills, hood and radiator core support are all different between the two models. The entire front clip can be switched between the cabs without ffew issues. The frame itself has a different cross member at the front for each model. The GMC cross member has a stair step sort of mounting surface and the Chevy cross member has even mounting surfaces. Otherwise besides the cross member they are the same all the way back. Other little stuff like guages, dash lettering are different, as well as exterior name badges of course.

Re: Old Navy 50's era trucks for sale
Well, to answer the first question... she knew the manager from previous employment together. And she put the word out she was looking for one that was available and I could come get it on a moments notice. Plus a huge helping of luck and good Kharma coming back at us.
Thank you all for the info. I am completely new to these year trucks as I have always had 67-87 year trucks. Judging by what y'all have said, and what I looked at. I think I have The hood from a chevrolet, and possibly the core support (haven't verified), but the fenders are from aGMC because it looks like they tack welded the turn signal holes closed that appeard on the front of the fenders... I think that was GMC only. But what confuses me is the doors. They have lever handles, but no vent windows. There is no louvers by the front doors either so I'm thinking later model GMC. The VIN states it to be a longbed, but the bed measures 77", So I don't know if the bed was changed, or if the cab and fenders were added to a chevy frame. I don't really care about numbers matching since I am pretty sure I'm going to go with an S10 frame. I really like the idea of the newer frame and suspension and it looks like a fairly simple install. What do you guys think? Shawn

Re: Old Navy 50's era trucks for sale
Okay,
I think I have a 52 or 53 cab (the speedometer looks like it belongs with the cab and it goes up to 90 mph) With 52 doors (lever style) with what I think are the vent wings gone..althought they don't look like they were ever there. the window felt appears to go the length of the window. I don't know...my head hurts now. Shawn

Re: Old Navy 50's era trucks for sale
if your going to use an s10 frame i'd sugest going with www.e-zchassisswap.com i went with an advanced design kit then found out about the e-z swap and now i wish that i would have waited. the advanced kit is nice. just that their are alot of extra stuff to buy. with the e-z chassis swap it comes with the trans, engine, steering column, brake, bumper, and battery mounts where the ad kit does not have it or you have to add it on to the price of the kit.

Re: Old Navy 50's era trucks for sale
I just became a dealer of these kits for E-Z Swaps The kit for the 47-54 Trucks runs $1495 and will likely be going up soon due to materials costs.
As soon as it thaws a little here we'll be putting a 47 1/2 Ton on an S-10 with an 87 Formula 350 TPI with the kit. Happy to answer any questions anyone has. MONGO

Re: Old Navy 50's era trucks for sale
Shawn, on your doors...if it has turn down handles and no vent wings they will be 50 or earlier. Turn down handles with vent wings will be 51 only. Vent wings with push button handles will be 52 to 55 1st series. On the cab, if there is no vent on the drivers side that pops open then you have a 50 or later cab most likely. Unless someone put the newer outside cowl panels on the cab during a repair.

Sorry to drag up an old post, I found this cool site by searching for info on these "old Navy Truck" Looks like I got one of the rough ones. Big Six when you talk about turn down handles, do you mean the outside ones? My outside handles are push button I have wing windows without push buttons. On the left side of the cab where there might of been a vent, it currently has a bulge there and what apprears to be a lot of bondo. I'm going to do a search here to see if i can find a link to decoded my vin Tommy |

Wow, a year and a half old. You've been doing a lot of reading to get to this one.
Anyway, welcome to the board.

Try this for a vin decoder. It will at least tell you model, year, and location of original build.

Re: Old Navy 50's era trucks for sale
Junk, Yes I was referring to the door handles in that statement. There are push button type and turn down type handles. Push button were 52 and later. Turn down door handles were 51 and earlier on Advance Design trucks. 1951 is the only year when the door handle was a turn down type and the door had vent wing windows installed. Earlier years has a one piece door window and turn down handles. !952 and later had push button door handles and vent wing windows. A person can make the doors fit what ever year truck they want with some minor mods here and there. So it is sort of difficult to base a year of a truck on the doors only. There are other identifiing styling changes or whatever they are called that can help a guy out. The vin plate attached to the insde drivers door jam will be the best place to start for identification. Chevy and GMC used very different vin numbers. There are decoders out there that will help you if that is your goal.
Use this if you have a GMC vin code. http://www.oldgmctrucks.com/page0010.html

Re: Old Navy 50's era trucks for sale
looked at more that a handfull of the old navy trucks and being they were display trucks they were slapped together as fast as they could be to meet the contract deadlines. most of the them had rather creative thing done with body filler. i'm thinking they lined the beds with plastic then had a cement truck filled with bondo pump the bed full. having a crew of at least a dozen people began applying it everywhere as fast as they could before it kicked off..... lol

Cool, it isn't everyone who can make a good looking truck out of a clothing store display rack. I like it.
