Have you ever seen a trailing arm modified like this?
I started taking the rear suspension apart to change the trailing arm bushings and I found that the drivers side arm had been modified. I don't see any damage to the arm so I don't think its a repair. Do you think I should replace it just in case?

You might want to put a string on it from several differant angles and compare it to the other one, for straightness / lenght from end to end...just a thought.

CPP actually makes a plate set for doing this down the entire length of the arms for reinforcement. I certainly wouldn't get rid of it because of the plate.

I agree.....My '66 C20 has trailing arms that are like that, and I've seen a few other C20's like that as well.

I have seen a number of them, mostly on C20 Custom Camper trucks, so it may have been a dealer-installed option, for the heavier load-carrying capacity for the cabover campers.

Yah, but JGross's arm looks like it is spot welded instead of riveted.

I believe the plates that you guys have riveted to the trailing arms are a factory design modification. I speculate that GM had problems with these trailing arms spliting so this was the fix.
I base that upon my own experience with my trailing arms and also based on the following link and the picture below from the 67-72 forum: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...light=trailing Pictures below are GM built arms and they have welded plates. The trailing arms in the 60's had a bad habbit of cracking or splitting and this was a VERY common repair. The one I have was called back to the dealer and welded (plated or boxed)there...according to original owner.
