Do different types of lowering spindles center wheel different???

I noticed on my 72 chevy that when i switched from stock spindalls to 3'' beltech spindalls that my wheels seem to be closer to the firewall??? My truck is bagged but it is still quite noticable at ride height??? I have had the truck aligned as well??? Any thought on this??? Different spindalls???

If the spindles are manufactured corretly they shouldn't so that. You should be able to compare the stock spindles to the drop spindles to see if there is an offset between the ball joint attachment points and the axle.

It's going to happen at least a little bit because of the caster. As the "axle" part of the spindle moves upward, it move back slightly at the same time, and that is just on the solid forging. As the suspension travels because of the air-bags, it will be more pronounced.

Re: Do different types of lowering spindles center wheel different???

If no change is made except for the spindles shouldn't the caster at ride height be the same?

Well, I think I overstepped my knowledge and have myself questioning what I posted. I will let the experts tackle this and I may learn something

Re: Do different types of lowering spindles center wheel different???

I was going to object, but I'll buy that in theory but, in practice --- oh forget it... I was trying to find the specifications for the stock geomotry and got tired of gettinguseless links on Google.

I think it is the lower stance, via the bags, that is responsible for the deflection, not the spindle (not in some noticble way) but I can't really make a case for it without the service manual since it appears that no one has put these figures on line anywhere.

It just seems that the castor would have to be fairly severe to move the wheel backwards a "noticble" amount with no change other than the spindle.

Re: Do different types of lowering spindles center wheel different???

I did say slightly....from the spindle itself. Most of the movement toward the rear comes from the suspension travel.

You are right in the thought of the caster not changing....it just that the wheel moves back slightly.

I only noticed it on my 73 when we put 6 degrees of caster in it, for stability at the drag strip

Yes, an alignment shop would be able to adjust the caster during an alignment. You can verify where it's currently @ but there might be limitations for how much they can set-up w/your truck vs. what you are 'visually' hoping for.

Re: Do different types of lowering spindles center wheel different???

yeah dont throw your alignment out the window to try and center your wheels in the wheel wells. Its just the way those trucks are S10s are the same way which is why some people scoot the cab back when doing a body drop to recenter the wheels up front.
