If they are the same casting no's they will likely have the same holes on the same ends. Line up side by side facing the same way and not as though they are on the engine and you will know right away. If for some reason the holes are different then as already said make sure you are going to get your accessory holes where you need them.

On every SBC head i have seen, the heads are exactly the same. If you lay them right next to each other, you will see that they have the same holes on the end of each head. With a short water pump truck, the head will have holes for the alternator braket on one end, and a hole for the battery ground cable on the other. The temp sending hole is also on each head, just one is plugged. They only go on one way, so you should be just fine, unless they are different casting numbers as stated above. GM did this to save money and time (make 2 heads on one mold instead of 2 heads on 2 molds)

Like they said, both sides are the same. You do know which order to torque the bolts, right?

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm at home now, so I got the heads all figured out. I have just the small stuff to put on now. Got everything from the crank to the intake done tonight . Well I still have to put the push rods, and rocker arms on. Good night of progress

(Can you believe we had a kid actually believe this once!?!?!)

LOL! IT was when i was in the army and we pulled a Hummer in to service it. I was training the FNG how to service them and I ran down the list explaining what needed to be done. (I was getting ready to leave the motor poos since I was clearing getting ready to come back state side) As I was ready to walk out of the bay, I told the kid to read me the mileage and he said 49thousand and some chainge.
You shoulda seen the look on his face when i told him. "Oh sh!t man...you need to rotate the heads before 50,000. OTherwiser you'll wear out the passenger side becouse the torque roatates the engine to where all the fuel and air goes to that side and the drivers side is hardly used."
HE was pretty p!ssed an hr later whe I came back and he had all the tool , was ready to rip it apart, and was trying to locate head gaskets! (Which a job like head gaskets was out of our job level anyways!)

50000 MILES...really? What oil are using in your liquid sodium cooler? I an only getting 5000 miles out of mine so have been rotating them every 3000 just to be on the safe side! I love this board...so much help and this will save me a ton on head gaskets alone!

The heads should be the same and be interchangable but be careful with the head gaskets. I am no expert on Chevy V8's so maybe someone else knows better but some engines have coolant passages that must line up with gasket holes etc. If you get the head gaskets reversed, they will overheat. I know this can happen on Toyota V6's from reading another forum devoted to them.
