Provision for A/C

I am currently in the middle of a build on a 71 and I do not know what to do with the evap core/heater box. I intend on just running a vintage air setup in the future. If I do this should I just delete the evap core/heater setup? Will the vintage air provide heat as well?

Re: Provision for A/C

I have a vintage air sure fit in my 69 burb and it is a heat/cool unit. I didn't keep any of the old heater core components. The only thing repurposed is the heater controls in the cab. Mine was a non original a/c truck. Other members (or vintage air) will need to chime in regarding a factory a/c trucks keep/toss items. Make sure your levers and switch are in good shape. You can get repops from many period vendors. I use LMC for most stuff?!

Re: Provision for A/C

If you use Vintage or Oldair or one of those other vendors, your current evaporator will just go away. How you want to close up the holes is up to you. You can buy a heater delete kit to close up the old holes and then use the kits template to make new holes, or go about it any way you want. Really its up to you. My Oldair kit came with a block off plate that just covered the old holes in the firewall with a plate. Vintage air uses a bulkhead fitting, but not sure how they take care of the firewall holes.

Re: Provision for A/C

Vintage air uses the same thing, a black ABS block off plate. It looks just OK. If your going to really do up the firewall up 'right,' I would suggest a patch plate, welded and smoothed! I am very happy with my Vintage Air system and have zero experience with the old air unit. I am subscribed to several other threads that are in the processes of adding a rear air unit to their burb. I have a unit out of a 87 burb and will be installing it someday.

I have also purchased Vintage Air AC unit for my '57 truck. Should be installing it in the next month or so.

Re: Provision for A/C

Went out and snapped a few pics of the cover plates. I installed this system in '97.

Here you can see the cover plates, like I said before: Black ABS, not great, just ok. I call it good enough! The yellow wire runs to my AC idle up solenoid on my carb, I guess I should have used black wire.

Here's the center ac outlet provided in the kit. I used their template, fit perfect. Only now no room for AM speaker. Hense its cheesey install on floor. Was a temporary fix that seems to have turned permanent. Oh well, radio works so whos complaining.
The heater controls are unchanged. The two position switch that you see is for dual fuel tanks.

Third and Fourth pic show left and right ac outlet. Their design is different from the stock type a little, but again, they work well. In the last pic you can see the housing of the ac unit under the dash. The kit provides the new sized glove box, as the ac unit takes up some of the space.
