How to mod our tailgates for easy removal?

At one time there was some good info on here about modifying the right side tailgate bracket in order for a easy removal like the newer trucks. Can anyone find the link, I can't. I was thinking about using a set of brackets from a newer truck in the 72. My 96 Silverado brackets look pretty similar.

Re: How to mod our tailgates for easy removal?

I was wondering about this myself...I have an 85 parts truck and the brackets on it look similar to those on the 67-72's. I think I will try to take them off this week and see if they will interchange.

I know Levi (IvelDesigns) did this on his red bagged truck. It is probably in his build thread on it. You might PM him. He hangs out mostly in the "builds" forum.

Some trucks have a cutout (I believe 73 on up) that allows you to remove the tailgate. I knew a guy that did this to his truck for easy removal.

Re: How to mod our tailgates for easy removal?

I had the link from the board before my laptop died a couple of months ago. I cannot get the search function to work either. I am thinking putter did a write up , but i could be mistaken.

Make it too easy to remove, and it might grow legs in the middle of the night.

I'm just sayin'........

The allen key mod sounds pretty good, though.

How would you get the arms that hold the tail gate up off?

Re: How to mod our tailgates for easy removal?

Align the elongated ends and they slip right off the tailgate.

Unless you meant to remove the from the bedsides... I think it's two bolts each side.

Allen key? Do you mean a allen head cap screw? I can see the ball bearing pin. but not the allen key.

they are different. the bolt spacing is off. I am trying to remember how I did mine. I know it took some grinding and welding but I used parts from both vintages.

Re: How to mod our tailgates for easy removal?

I have cut a slot before. But I stopped and for years I just take the bolts out. It`s easy and I almost never need to take my tailgate off.
With a slot there is the risk of the tailgate falling off when left down.Nowadays I`d be worried about theft and am glad mine doesn`t pop off.

Re: How to mod our tailgates for easy removal?

has anyone came up with any ideas for this, or found any write ups on this topic?? i have a rear rollpan and canot get to the lower hinge bolts without removeing the rollpan. i know most people dont ever need to remove the tailgate but sometimes i like to roll without mine. unbolting the entire rear of my truck just to get the tailgate off is crazy.
