Is this normal???

Been having a problem with pinging all summer long even though I'm running at 6 deg base timing on a low compression engine, so I popped my dist cap off to see what I could screw around with and found this. The fist two pics show worn(?) counterweights and the last pics shows what I'm used to seeing.

What do you guys think?

looks to be made that way.... look in your first pic and you can see theres a notch in the other peice for the tab on the weight to slide into. never seen that myself.
as for pinging... welcome to crappy gas and hot temps... ya may have to step up the octane youre using....(87 to 92 ?)

Wow! That's pretty impressive wear. How's your truck run now?

I have never seen weights worn like that.

Re: Is this normal???

Just for the heck of it, I swapped in the dist from the last pic and am running base timing of 8 deg. Not a hint of pinging! It's from a '68 283, so even if both were in perfect condition, I'm sure the advance curve is slightly different between the two.

I'm going to try 12 deg advance tomorrow and see what that does.
