Truck Rally's/Tire Combo

I am in the process of the 4/6 drop on my truck and have acquired a set of the 9" truck rally's. What tire does everyone think looks best with these rims? The tires that are mounted on them now are to narrow and look like balloons after being stretched out to match the rim. I do not think I would even run them out of safety concerns and fear of looking ridiculous. Have you seen something on the site that looks great?

Thanks!

Re: Truck Rally's/Tire Combo

What diameter rim is it? I have a 4/4 drop on mine soon to be a 4/5 and I am running 245 65r 18 on all 4 corners

Re: Truck Rally's/Tire Combo

I'm running Wheel Vintiques. 15x8's and 15x10's. The 8's have 245-60's and the 10's have 275-60's. 4-inch backspace on the 8's and 5-inch backspace on the 10's.

What year is your truck? The rear track thru '69 is about an inch narrower than the 70-72. The disc conversion added about an inch to the front track.

Hey BHyatt ...FYI: I had a similar drop with Rally's and ran into clearance issues with the front rims. When turning the wheel it hit the control arm (?). Although not all have experienced this issue. Good Luck.

Re: Truck Rally's/Tire Combo

Thanks 70CST for the heads up on clearance issues.

As for rim size they are factory truck rally's which are 15" and they are 9" wide.

My truck is a '71 short bed.

Another point...I don't think GM Factory Rally's came in 9" wide wide. They were either 7" or 8" wide. I might be wrong so I will let others chime in.

As far as BS (Back spacing) for the wheels so they don't rub. I had to go with 4.5".

Re: Truck Rally's/Tire Combo

Most here will run a 255/60/15 steer 275/60/15 rear, 245/60/15-275/60/15, or 255/70/15-235/70/15 combo.

The rallies you have are probably 8" wide. GM didn't make 9" wheels. The 8" width is from the inside of the rim where the tire bead seals. I beleive the 8" rally wheels had either a 4 or 4.25" backspace.

Here's a shot of my truck with a 3.5/5 drop with 15x8 wheels with 3.75" bs running 255/60/15-275/60/15 tire combo.

The truck below is see ten's truck with 8" rallies and 275/60/15 tires all around and a 3.5/6 drop.

Those 15" wheels look good. I have 16x8 TT II's on all fours but I had rubbing issues with a 2" coil drop and a 2" spindle drop. I might go with 15x8 TT II's up front with 16x8's in the rear.

Back to the thread...I don't know why but not all those who dropped their trucks didn't have clearance issues while other (me) did.

Thanks for the pics 68Stepbed...

Thanks 68 Stepbed! This is exactly what I was looking for and, I appreciate you taking the time to put it together. I have not measured the rims since I hauled them home a couple of nights ago and haven't really had a chance to measure them. I know they are wider than the rims I currently have on the truck that came off a later model GMC. I just was not sure of the factory diameter I just remembered that the van rally's are narrower than the truck rally's. That tire size looks great.

Your truck is a great looking stepside!

Is anyone using a tire that is shorter (lower profile/smaller overall diameter) than the 255/70/15?

Re: Truck Rally's/Tire Combo

I also thought I would ad that I just cannot seem to let loose of the white letters on factory rims.

Am I the only one?

Re: Truck Rally's/Tire Combo

truck rallies came in 7" & 8" widths ... van rallies were 6.5" wide ...

I have 8" rallies on rear of a stepside with 255-60/50 tires & 6.5" van rallies on front with a 235-60/15 ... I will have to roll the inside of the step fender as it barely rubs when the bags are dumped.

IMO white letters look best on rallies. I prefer black walls out with aluminum wheels

Thanks for the compliment.

Use this for reference:

255/70/15 is 29" tall with a 10.2" section width

275/60/15 is 28" tall with an 11" section width

295/50/15 is 26.67" tall with a 12.17" section width

Re: Truck Rally's/Tire Combo

So there is another 1/2-1" of drop with the 295/50/15. Now to start the search and save for tires. Thanks for the help 68 Stepbed. I will have to go to the tire store and check out these profiles.
