Need to know the rules for your class.
Back in the day myself and friends all had 4x4 that we run in the local stock class.
We would make the rear solid and let the front suspension work.
We found the ditch witch tires worked the best ( found on a trench machine )
A large cu inch engine with good torque.I ran a 400 smblk.
just some ideas.

Re: my 68 what to build with it??? ideas welcome

here is what I have for a somtimes driver and puller. Yours is a long bed so it should be easier to set up. My short bed wants to hop and it has been a tough road to tame the suspension. When pulling I bolt the axle to the frame locking it up solid, some pulls require at least 1" of travel. I run ladderbars on the rear and have torque bars on the front. A setup would probably look better if you use matching bars front and rear. I ran this truck on the street for several years and when I started pulling with it I added the front bars. When I pull I use a set of 35" BFGs, the trxus tires (normally on the truck) are known to be a good pulling tire if you are required to use DOTs but 39.5s are too big for pulling. You will not likley be very competitive with a small block unless you spend tons of $$$$. I run a well built 454. You will want to run a standard tranny, the sm465 with 205 case is what works best. Low range second gear is used 99% of the time by all pullers. Autos are rairly used. I run a dual clutch setup. 60 front, 14 bolt rear, 456 gears.
Some tracks require driveshaft loops, I only run two on the rear and have needed them a few times. Run 1450 u-joints and yokes at every joint.
There are tons of other tips and setups. Don't go with much of a lift either, mine has been lifted for years before I started pulling with it. Sounds like you have had some funn pulls already so I'm sure you are putting your ear to the ground at each event. Thats the best way to learn.
check out truckpulls.com for tons of help.
Like I said I,v had lots of hopping issues and usually have to peddle in and out of the throttle(not good for a pull)
These two pulls both got first place the ugly way in the 5000 - 6000 lbs class.
pull up "mudd mizer" on utube.

Have fun with your build. I enjoy driving mine some and pulling some.

When you do your clutch you might want to take a look at the flywheel from a 427 tall deck. They came in some of the C60 two ton trucks and such. Thay have way more weight then stock and the momentum might help you out. They are neutral balance so it will work with the 327.
