switching to Warn lock out hubs

I am building a 73 4x4 - 4 speed with one of my boys and want to put Warn hubs on the front in order to be able to unlock the front end and maybe increase fuel mileage a bit.

After doing a search I also saw mention of doing something to the transfer case. Is that also needed?

As you can tell from my signature I usually hang out elsewhere but have been lurking here for a while trying to learn as much as I can from you guys.

Thanks in advance or any help.

Re: switching to Warn lock out hubs

Yes, If you have the NP 203 transfercase, there is a kit to either change out the planatary gears item 20 or the rear shaft assembly in this picture: http://www.drivetrain.com/images/sto...3_p1_large.jpg

A good write on this page: http://coloradok5.com/milemarkerpt.shtml

The upper shaft kit is far superior to the one on bottom in strength but is also more expensive.

While you are in there it would be good to check chain wear and change if stretched.

Re: switching to Warn lock out hubs

I am going to have to look closer at the transfer case as it may be a NP205. I wanted to sell an extra one I had once to a guy once and he said it was the older one with all gears and no chains. He needed the one with chain drive.

So if I have the NP205 is there also a kit to get it part time?

What should my 73 1/2 ton have in? NP203 or NP205?

How can I tell the difference?

Thanks again.

The np205 is already a part time transfer case. A very nice transfer case in fact.

Here is some pics to tell what you have.

Like 71 said it is already part time and is the best of the GM transfer cases as far as being heavy duty because it is entirely gear driven and no chains do stretch or break. Just make sure you keep the lube level correct so everthing lubricated.
