transfer case trouble

I have a 72 Chevy Truck with the running gear out of a 81 suburban. Recently I was driving and the rear wheels locked up. I put the truck in neutral and got it towed to my garage. my mechanic took the case out took it to his shop, and he said it was not rebuildable. I found a low mile case and installed it and the truck does not drive. I switched gears in the transfer case and still nothing. I have a terrible noise from the trans putting it in park. I pulled the transfer case started the engine put it in gear and the tail shaft spins. I did not grab a hold of the shaft to see how much torque it was putting out or if it was just spinning. With the transfer case on the ground I put it in gear and it seems to operate properly. while it was in 4 high I reinstalled the case and the same thing is happening. It wont drive and it wont go into Park without making noise like Im trying to be rolling and put it in park. Please help

Re: transfer case trouble

It might be the splined collar between the trans and transfer case partly stripped out .

Re: transfer case trouble

the spline looks fine. I will check tomorrow if it is the same number of splines. It was not in 4wd. The transfer is out of an 83 truck, np208. it bolts to a 700r4. Kind of a bummer is the new transfer is a fulltime 4wd unit.

Re: transfer case trouble

sounds like the tcase input is different from ur output shaft that could be the culprit

Re: transfer case trouble

Re: transfer case trouble

I figured it out. this transfer case would have been behind a turbo 400. So im on the hunt for a 27 spline.

Re: transfer case trouble

Can you swap the input shaft from your old T/C?

you can change the shaft on yours as well.... if they make a 27 spline one for it. I'm assuming you have the adaptor that connects your t/c to your trans allready?? seems like the easiest thing to do if they do make the 27 spline shaft for your t/c..... check advance adaptors.
