My 64 build
I hate to call this my build thread because i won't be posting regularly but here it is anyway. It is a 64 that i picked up a while back for $500.00. This is what i have done so far:
1. swapped complete front end and rear end from an 86 donor truck 2. Got a nice set of 15x8 Chevy Truck Rally wheels 3. Found a nice SWB (don't care much for the stepside in these year model trucks) 4. Got a nice 283 V8 waiting in the wings My next step is disassembly and take the frame to the sand blaster and take all the sheet metal to be media blaster. Once that is done i will start working on the rust that you see in the pictures. The red truck is my dad's 66 that we picked up for $900. As soon as his shop is completed we will start tearing it down. We have a Jag rear end waiting to go in it. I will post pics as i can. http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...n/100_0783.jpg[IMG][/IMG] Last edited by CVA59; 10-08-2010 at 08:28 PM. |

It's nice to finally see some pics of your truck Zack. Looks great, keep up the good work.
Your dad's truck looks to be in good shape too.

Re: My 64 build
Thanks Fab. The weather is much nicer now so i am starting to get more interested in working on it. Today, with the help of my dad and my uncle we got the cab off. I can now tear the frame apart and get it to the sandblaster next week.

Re: My 64 build
Got all my stuff back from the blaster today. Everything turned out awesome and it only cost me 100 bucks. I am very please with the results. Tomorrow it will all get paint semi-gloss black and i hope to start re-assembly next week.

Re: My 64 build
HOLY CRAP!!!! I just realized I needed to scroll to the right to see all you got blasted. I paid $100 to get 4 wheels blasted here in Southern MD.
Apparently I got more than blasted.... Last edited by jocko; 10-08-2010 at 07:58 PM. |

Re: My 64 build
LOL. I feel real good about the price for sure. The metal is not pitted or anything, it is as smooth as new. This is a new guy i tried and i will be going back to him in the future. I picked up my paint today, i can't wait to get up tomorrow and start spraying. I will post pics again when it is all painted.

Re: My 64 build
WOW you got a smokin deal for $100....and he did an excellent job too. Just a word of warning since he is a new guy...if you take any body parts to him, make sure he knows how to do sheet metal without warping it. Some guys do, some don't. Do you know what media he is using? Some primers/paints are not compatable with silica sand blasted surfaces.

Re: My 64 build
Sweet. I love the patina on that black truck. Wouldn't change it a bit, except the chassis of course. Very nice.

Hey Fab. Yes, this guy refuses to do sheet metal because of that issue. I have another guy here who does plastic media blasting. He is set up to do all my sheetmetal. He has quoted me 500 to do the complete truck (sheet metal only). That sounds like a fair price to me, what do you guys think? |

Re: My 64 build
I agree, that's a fair price but plastic media will not remove rust

Re: My 64 build
I paid $1200 for a media blast 10 years ago, $500 is a very, very good deal for the whole truck in my opinion.
Any your sandblasting was a steal! I can't see how he didn't use that much money in sand alone. Paint looks great, I'll be watching this one.

Re: My 64 build
I got some more done today. Stripped the cab down and loaded it up. I will be dropping it off tomorrow for blast. I've got a lot of rust repair ahead of me looks like.

Re: My 64 build
Good news and bad. The $50.00 it cost to have my cab and several pieces blasted was well worth it. The company that did it does outstanding work. The bad news, I guess the pics speak for themselves. I have some pretty significant rust issues in places that to me are especially difficult to repair. I will be ordering all new patch panels for the floor and rocker areas. This is definitely going to be quite a challenge for me. Any ideas from you guys on this rust issue would appreciated.

Re: My 64 build
Get another cab for patch panels, or buy some 18 gauge cold rolled steel to cut your own that you can`t buy.

Re: My 64 build
Thanks Rich. That is probably what i will have to do. I am looking now for the best deal on patch panels. I will buy all i can and fabricate the rest. I guess i am just really not looking forward to taking all this on, LOL. I wish i could find a decent parts cab that i could cut some of the pieces from that were still in good shape.
